Mountain Biking - Bs

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I picked up the Norco Ryde about a week ago, in 1 week the crank came loose and the teeth or something on the center part of the crank got worn down b/c the left part was rubbing on it, i payed about 1100 for this bike (CAD) and now a week later they want me to pay 200 dollars for something that was wrong with it when they handed it to me, i rode it hard once on about an hour trail, and tops 4 other times, and still they want 200 for the parts, we're still sorting things out, but thats how my sutuation is right now
Update: we have negotiated the price down to $50 but we still think we shouldn't have to pay anything because its only a week old and i really rode it once, so we're still negotiating

It should be taken care of by the LBS. A good shop will take care of their customers.

Considering that we haven't seen the damage in question (nor is his description detailed enough to figure it out) we can't make presumptions as to who should do what. If it was damaged caused by something that a lay person would recognize as being wrong, but kept riding it then I damn sure wouldn't fix it for free. Call it a Dee Dee Dee tax

What exactly does this mean?
What exactly does this mean?
Exactly. He wants us to make a judgment based on that.
it's a three piece crank, so the left part, where the pedal screws into came loose from the center part, the teeth that are on the center part that hold onto the left part got worn down. and yes once i realized that it came loose i tightened it and then it was fine, i rode it again then it loosened again so i stopped riding it then took it in

My bike did the same thing.. was a Truvativ crank and the left crank arm kept coming loose off the BB, came loose once, I tightened it, came loose again. I then brought it back to the LBS and put on a Shimano Deore crankset for free. I dont know if its any better but it also came loose and I tightened back up, been fine since.

I think he stripped the bb splines?

After doing a bit of digging.......If they're still using the Truvativ Ruktion I got your answer. http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/Crankset/product_125948.shtml
The crank sucks

Somebody needs to show your LBS mechanic how to install cranks.

If you woudn't fix a problem that happend on a "first ride" then you suck. I don't care if he did keep riding it.He's a noob. With the amount of mtnbike buisness in this area, a shop with with service like that would close up quick.

i rode it hard once (1) on about an hour trail, and tops 4 other times,(4)
That adds up to FIVE times (who knows what "hard" means?) and even the most ******** noob should know loose + wobbling = wrong
His initial description could have been ANYTHING
Like I said in an earlier post it looks like this is a common issue for that crank. Do I think that the shop should replace it now that he explained what the flying **** he was talking about? Yes I do. However I wouldn't want to put the same ******** model crank on there if I was the shop knowing that it would happen again and it's a known issue. Heck if I was the customer I'd demand something better and be willing to pay the difference. No shop should upgrade for free.
Ive been riding for a while, but when the crankbolt on my new bike came lose after a week i didnt notice it at first. Fortunately there was no damage and torqing it back up did the trick.
I told my shop about it and they apologised and mentioned that truvative had some funny torque specs and they usually go beyond them from experience, but perhaps my particular bike fell through the cracks. I got the impression that they would have fixed any damage had there been any.

It's an easy thing to miss. This sounds like it was either missed on assembly (their fault) or part of the pattern with this crank set (manufacturer's issue). He didn't say if it came loose during the "hard" ride or if it came loose then he pounded it.

You are lucky the crank didn't come off at the wrong time. I just installed a HT II crank yesterday and thought to myself how two allen bolts are keeping this whole thing together...

If the shop sold a faulty product to him , then a good shop should upgrade for free. From the first post, it sounded like he stripped the center of the crank arm. Thats not to hard to figure out.

Yeah real obvious. I totally figured out that he was talking about the BB interface when he's talking about the "teeth" and "rubbing".

For all I knew he was talking about the "teeth" on the "middle" ring. Mix that in with "rubbing" and you don't get crank wobble. It could have been anything from a loose chainring to <insert deity of choice here> knows what. This is like diagnosing a problem over the phone. Sometimes you can get it, but if the description sucks there's no way to know what the **** is wrong until you see it.

My cranks were wobbly after 2 days with my bike...put on the LX Hollowtech cranks and have never had a problem since.
Do people really replace new cranks when they get loose?!

my bike store took good care of me when my fork exploded in the first 10 seconds of my first ride...and then I pounded on it in the woods for 3 hours and brought it back to them really broken. they warrantied it no questions asked. Good bike store...reputable bike store...

I have a truvativ crankset that is doing this right now. I'm going to take it into work and have the mechanic help me look at it.
Stinkin cheap cranks.

Yeah, That is a very dangerous design, 2 bolts holding everything together! If i were you i wouldn't use those! It is quite probable they just might fly apart at the wrong time & cause serious injury or death to you.So to be safe you should remove them & give 'em to me.

It's a tough retail environment. Even if it is Wet-ears-McNoob coming through the door every day, the customer should expect tight crank arms.
Cranks usually come installed from the factory, so fast assemblers often overlook crank bolt torque. I say the shop eats the cost.

Gotta agree with Raiyn on this one. Upgrades aren't automatic nor should the shop necessarily be the one footing the bill. Now, if it is a good shop, they can call either the bike rep or the crank maker and get something done (upgrade, updated model or something).
Once they've worked that out, then the shop gets to be the good guy by upgrading the parts without giving away the shop.
If the guy paid for an X level component, why should he get a Y level component? Another brand's X level, sure, but the next one up? Why?
Now, if it keeps happening and the guy's bike keeps breaking, then the shop "owes" him something to make it right, but not on the first issue. Sheesh... where's this sense of entitlement come from?

So you shoot the "go to the LBS" thing in the foot. Why would you buy from a shop that sold a bike with a defective part then sold you a fix for that part? I don't care if its a less expensive part as long as they make it right.
Huh?
I said I thought the shop ought to get you an equal part but not a free upgrade. Not for the first repair anyway.
I have no idea what you mean by shooting the "go to the LBS" thing in the foot.
