so i've had my trek 520 since the start of december, put about 4000kms on it and have had to have the wheels re-trued about 4 times (2 each). i'm no mechanic so don't trust myself to attack it with the spoke key but am thinking i might have to learn to save the hassle.

what i'm interested to know is whether thse truly are the "bombproof" wheels that i've heard from some folks or whether they're not actaully all that much chop as the wheel specialist at my lbs has said. could it be my riding style that sees this happening? i ride predominantly on sealed roads and bike paths and, though i'm up near 100kgs, try to ride pretty lightly.

i'm quite worried about loading the bike up fully if the wheels are already struggling with me just carrying up to about 15-20kgs (though i usually load it all into one rear pannier - could that be causing problems?). is there a similar wheel that might suit better or would i simply be best to head to my lbs and ask them to build something up there?

better wheels out there. Stock Bontrager 700c Mavericks are kind of light duty, IMO.

LX/XT hubs on Sun Rhynolites, Mavic 319s' or Velocity Dyads.

Velocity is Australian company, yes? Dyad is a tandem rated rim. but no eyelets, which some people feel leeds to premature fractureing at the spoke holes.

Consider Phil Wood Hubs if you've got the 'money to burn' syndrome.

I Had the same problems with the Mavic open pro, they are good light touring rims, but as I carry all my camping gear with me after 2500 miles they developed cracks by the spokes. I was then advised by my bike shop, Thorn Cycles, that I should have requested and explained at the time of ordering the bike what kind of touring I was going to do. When I explained to them that at the time of buying the bike I did tell the sales guy I wanted a bike to take me to China and I always go fully loaded, they without a fuss replaced both my rims at no cost and put Sun CR 37 on, they also insisted that these were to be hand built as they would be stronger. So far so good, I have done another 2500 miles on them and they still feel and look good
