Last night I was riding around goofing off and I completely, irreparably stripped out my hub. It was pretty demoralizing but the wheel was crap anyway, I probably should have expected it. Anyway, I had to walk about 3 and a half miles home at 3 in the morning. Anyone got any horror stories?

I walked about 5miles home after a long day without food.

I blew out my tire doing some street on my BMX

you can always stuff grass into you tire, tape in on with duct tape, if the chain breaks and you can't shorten it or put it back, then you always have a poorly designed push scooter. W*mart sometimes stocks 27" tires, which is one of the only good things about them. Once got a flat, walked the bike into the store and reinflated the new tube with one of the foot pumps, alot quicker.

the longest I had to walk was recent when I bought a bike at goodwill that was missing tubes so had to walk both bikes about half a mile.

i've walked plenty of bikes, but the most embarassing, not the longest mind you, was walking my mountain bike out of a trail after I trashed my derailer. I kept having to explain to people that my derailer was broke and that I didn't need help fixing it... when you're a big dude, walking your bike up hill out of a trail just feels like a walk of shame, no matter how badly your bike is damaged.

Snapped forks caused me to have to huddle in a phone box for about 4 hours while I waited to get collected.

I once fixed a puncture with a gum leaf in Australia. The tyre held about 40 psi no problem.

i was mtn biking a couple years ago and blew thru all my co2 on some too short presta valves. walked about 5 miles out in sidi dominators and my feet were freakin cobbled.
the worst though was when i was younger and dating a psychotic girl and walked twelve miles to get back to my car in cons with no socks. it took the most part of an afternoon, but it was better than having to deal with the girl...

not a gear, but I stripped out my pedal thread one time on my fixie, had to pedal home left legged for 2 and a half miles on flats. made me walk funny the next day.

still faster than walking though.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v661/karmalien/untitled.jpg please excuse my lack of photochop skills, this was done in ms paint and mapquest, but it sort of represents the longest/ scariest walk I had, sans cell phone (battery died)after a constantines show at the beacland ballroom, through east cleveland at 230 in the morning..

Yeah, but the show was probably worth it. God bless the Constantines.

I had to walk about 5 km in too small Chuck's after I flated a rear tire. First ride on a new wheelset. The rim tape wasn't quite centered, so the tube flated inside the rim ...

I think the longest was 2~ miles for me. I took a freshman out for a ride to show him how to get from campus to Atlanta, blew a tire, botched the patch job & extra tube, and had to walk back to campus in my SIDI road cleats with him tagging along. Hopefully he figured out how to get to Atlanta with someone else...

Hahaha its true.... although it might have helped if I had brought along my phone.

If the bike is truly "down for the count" that's when the cellular phone comes out. I've got enough friends and family around that I don't need to have my feet covered in blisters from walking five miles in road cleats. Mountainbiking might be a different story, although my friends and I carry lots more spares for more comprehensive repairs...

8.7 miles.

I was twelve, road my Huffy to the beach to perve on some girls, but got a flat. Tried calling collect home but no one was there. Walked about half, rode on the flat rear for the other half cause I was getting so tired of walking, it was getting dark out and kinda cold.

Woah man. Even though realistically nothing is probably going to happen to you that still is scary as ****. Basically anywhere in Cleveland I'd feel safer on a bike.

I got one last week on my way to campus. Dangit! A short ride so no flat replacement gear on me. I always crave a huge sandwich board deal when I have a flat that says, "I'd ride my bike if I didn't have a flat. I'm not walking it because my legs are tired or because I'm a wimp." I just have this feeling that everyone who sees me is thinking, "Why is that dickface walking his bike instead of riding it?"

Yeah, I say lots of little prayers to myself when biking through bad parts of town that I won't pick up a flat. Good work, Calculus.

Well, not longest, but most recent:

Broke my chain a little over a mile from home. How, I don't know. Clean break.
Whoever said a chainless bike is a poorly designed scooter was very right.

I walked about a mile in DC during an alleycat then said **** it and rode the flat.

**** really!

Thats on a different level to all us wimps!

you must spill more details.

I snapped my chain today at the bike track I just rode 5 miles to.

Was really annoying as I lamely tried to get around a BMX track chainless, the 10year old kids ripping and a few high school girls watching was really bad.

I just left in shame, and walked 5 miles home- the scooter thing didnt work so good on my 2.4inch tires

Wheel came out of dropouts on a conversion [chain wasn't long enough] got completely frozen against the frame and had to carry the thing 2.5 miles on my shoulder (it wouldn't even roll). Added 1 link to get it right and now carry an adjustable wrench.

5 miles.....rural Vermont. Shredded toob
Had a patch kit and pump but the spare toob
was stuffed under the seat of my commuter

my longest walk was only 3.5 miles, but I enjoyed it becuase it gave me time to listen to music and gave everyone a chance to give me compliments on my bike. no big stiffy.

Cell phone + SO of 28 years..... There are SOME advantages to getting older. :)

I'll admit that a nice long walk can be really therapeutic if you approach it with the right attitude, though.

loose headset - 3 miles in old mtb shoes.
On my way out to mark the course for a race at about 1am. I had destroyed my favorite frame marking the course at 3am the night before and didn't have time to properly adjust this bike.
It was an old record headset and I didn't want to pit it. Later turned out it was already pretty bad. It was still worth the walk. Destroyed one set of cleats.

A couple of times, I have chosen to walk 2-4 miles home (in regular shoes) rather than fix a flat, even though I had the spare and pump. This was when I spent a lot of time riding around in the middle of the night. If it had been daytime, I probably would have fixed them.

I went for a ride on the Hawthorne Trail in Gainesville. Hit a bunch of glass late at night and had to walk 11-12 miles home. That's when I stopped being lazy, and started carrying a tool arsenal in my bag.

About 2 miles after a flat, nothing dramatic.

I was in a pretty gnarly crash during my first road race. I sprained my wrist and hip and bruised my ribs. Fed up my shifters, pedals and bent the seatstay on my bike. I took the train most of the way home, but still had to walk about a mile in road shoes carrying my bike. It really hurt.

Tube valve failed 20 miles from base. There was no way I was going to walk, so I rode back on the flat.

Last week: 4 miles, broke my fork end... well realized that it was broken and didn't want to risk it on the nice uphill ride home.

Walking sucks.

Also rode 20 miles last week with a tire taped together and a tube patched and reinforced with tape :)

The day I picked up my track bike I got a flat. It was a tubular and I didn't have a spare. Fortunately this happened about a mile from my home and I had a pair of shoes in my bag (my track bike has LOOK Keos...not good for walking).

500 metres after I snapped a chainring bolt coming up the hill where my house is. Resulted in the biopace ring I was using bending about 30 degrees, sending the chain off and the ring somehow into my left leg??? I was pissed, and bleeding, but 500m was lucky.

My worst wasnt a far walk but it sucked. I left work and got one block away, I had just stood up and was ready to charge the hill and the spindle in my right pedal snapped on the down stroke, I went down hard and slid into the cross walk. When I tried to stand up the pedal was still strapped to my foot and I slipped and fell again. And all of this was on a friday night right in the middle of the most popular bar strip in town
