I recently bought an old racing bike, which i aim to slowly make amazing.

Yesterday i was riding and the pedal fell off, its now threadbare and not going back on. i took it into Evans and they said my whole crank set etc is very old and the whole thing needs to be replaced.

So here are my questions:

1, Do crank sets come complete with bottom brackets, all websites are pretty non-specific about this.

2, Are bottom brackets a standard size, and if not which part am i measuring here?

3, If i change my crankset do i have to change my cassette etc?

4, My gears are old school ones situated half way up the frame of the bike, is this going to be a problem in any way?

5, Is fitting a crank set a job a novice like me could do, as i am really keen to get in to this alot more.

This is it for now i think, my terminology is probably all wrong, but i have tried . . . .

Would really appreciate any help, especially if it relates to parts on the evans website!

Ashley.

Identify the bike and componants in question the best you can. There should be at least "some" names & numbers. Also number of chain rings & cogs.
How many "arms" attach the crank arm to the chain rings?

How bad is the crank. IF the pedal is a 1/2" thread, it could probably be drilled and tapped for a 9/16" thread. That would be much cheaper than replacing the whole thing.

4 I think you mean shifters. Probably not
5 I certainley wouldn't attempt it as by first bike repair!
