General Cycling Discussion - What type of riding do you do?(Poll)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Don't know if this has been done, but I'm curious as to what type of bike people ride? I ride many different types, but consider myself a mountain biker first and foremost.

Just trying to get a census of all forum members! Just for fun!

Well, I ride my road bike on 20-40 mile rides for enjoyment, fun and fitness. I don't do much of "Road - Training, Crits, Triathlon,TT...etc" so not sure what to check. It is a lot more than leisurely neighborhood rides. And I don't do "slow rides" (on purpose, that is!) :D

So, I checked "Road" but not entirely correct.

You're asking two different questions here. What type of riding do I *do*? The bulk of my miles are commuting miles, probably a 4:1 or 5:1 ratio.

But the poll itself asks "what is my preference?" Well, my preference is for a long, long country road ride, spending the entirety of a sunny summer day doing a century through the rolling hills of Lancaster County.

I don't get to do that nearly as often as I'd like.

I ride road rides, not competitive really, but I ride for enjoyment, and fitness. I ride mostly 40-100 miles rides on weekends and 20+ during weekdays(3+ days during the week)

Road - endurance + leg power.
Freeride and urban - fun.

I had to vote Road even though my love for biking began with a dedication to mountain biking. Now with a new daughter I have to do what ever is convienient which most of the time means just hitting the road while she visits with granny.

I had to pick touring because even though I'm not always participating in extremely long loaded tours, I act like I am whenever riding which is to say that most of the time I'm out there to enjoy my surroundings, discover new things, places, etc... basically to explore by bike. Also, I used to (and occasionally still) do a combination of offroad and road touring with my MTB where I try to go from points of interest or towns to other points by way of as much offroad or unimproved trails as possible.

As others have stated, I chose road because that is where I get 99.99% of my miles. They are not leisure miles, nor are they races, crits, tri's, etc.

see below, but I also do road riding for the endurance training and to give my body a break from the pummeling it gets from mountain biking.

i'm a bmx freestyle/dirt jumper/street rider at heart so that's what I do.
even if i'm on my crappy mountain bike, I still ride it like a bmx.
seat lower, standing and feeling the bumps.

I like to ride in the woods on the mnt. bike for exercise and ride street for fun and enjoyment.

Definately Mountain. I rarely ride the road. Just don't like it. Occasionaly ride the Katy Trail when the trails are too muddy. It is somewhat like road riding but no cars.

I had to vote for road. But also commute (road bike) and do leisure riding (road bike).

Why can't you vote for more than one?

I had vote for MTBing, because even though I spend as much time on the roads, it's just not the same.

Well number one is commuting then I'd have to say road, but I just picked up a MTB so I have begun to learn the joys of that also

I'm pretty new to riding (well at least since before I had a driver's license) so I'm pretty much into leisure rides.

Yesterday it was gorgeous here (for once) so my boyfriend and I headed out to the D&R canal path. Got some fresh air, learned a bit of history about the old canal, and got to watch the Princeton crew teams out practicing on the lake adjacent to the canal.

Useless fact for the day: One of the first commercial uses of the telegraph was in Kingston, NJ where the canal's lock-keepers would telegraph canal traffic reports up and down the canal.

Most days, like today, I ride my road bike on a hard training ride. I'm doing the Tri For Real (Olympic distance) in July and I'm planning on scorching the bike portion. Afterwards, I ride to the office and change into my work clothes.

So, I picked road, but it could have been commuting. Or it could have been family/recreational since last night my wife and I rode over to the ballpark to watch the River Cats (local AAA team).

I lied. I'm sorry. I couldn't resist. The choice simply fit the avatar.

Let's see, commuting, road, mountain, recreational, touring. The order of those changes to suit whatever I feel like at the time and my situation. I agree, we need an option for "more than one of the above", or something similar. I haven't voted as yet.

Gee that was a tricky poll. I commute to work almost everyday but the commute is short-about 3 miles, but afterwards I take anywhere from 12-35 miles detour everyother day, and then on either a Saturday or Sunday I ride anywhere between 65-100 miles; but I am not training for anything nor am I touring, just riding for fitness. So I voted road training crits etc, but thats not what I'm doing and there was no class for what I do. Maybe I'm just reading too much into and should just shut-up!!
