Just got my order I've been waiting about 3 weeks for: a front Avid mechanical disc, and the Avid full metal jacket cable set. Sat down with a six pack of Lagunitas IPA last night and installed them. Got hung up on a few things so it took me until about 1:00 a.m. last night, but they seem to be on there and will be ready for my ride tomorrow. They look great on the silver XT hubs and silver Sun Singletrack rims!
Just wanted to gloat.

OH Baby! I got one on my commuter last month and those suckers rule! Dead stops, low maintainance and very cool looking.
Congrats!
Avid mechs/FMJ rule. I have 185's on my Stumpy front and back.

My friend has them on his Joker which is set up for downhill (It has an identity crisis) but they work spectacular, and they are incredibly adjustable you will love that! Enjoy.
I've got a pair on my Rockhopper FSR and I love 'em. To me they're actually easier to set up than V-brakes.

Just got them all tuned up and went for a quick test ride with my dog tonight. They really do stop good. I got them from beyondbikes.com, because they had the setup with 185mm rotor for the same price as the 165... I was amazed how easy the adjustment was- looking forward to some serious bombing on them now. Also, I had a question on the FMJ installation, and called the tech support. Was really impressed with how well the dude was able to help out. Really liking Avid right now!

I also in stalled Avid mech discs this spring. They definitely need a break-in period. After a few hard rides their stopping power increases noticeably. If you're happy with them in the beginning, you'll be ecstatic later.
I'm ready for some new pads, already. After a week in Moab in May and my weekly riding in the wet and mud here in NY the OEM pads are nearly gone.
Avids are the best mech discs. They'll do wonders with straight and full metal jacket housings. :)

Just got done with a nice 3 hour ride in Forest Park, and really like the new disc. Am glad with my decision to go with these over some hydros as setup and adjustment was so easy, and they were still stopping me instantly. The difference in feel and control with a disc is amazing.
i have avids on the front of my bike. they were set up by a knowledgable shop keep but I haven't been impressed w/ them. I was told they needed a break in period so I spend a few hours riding around town w/ the lever pulled in so the pads dragged.
they still don't lock up.
I'm guessing it's just me because everyone else thinks they are the bees knees.
any suggestions?
