I have a Specalized Sirrus Comp with a straight bar and MTB shifters etc. I have modified my rear to an Ultegra 11/23 to get more speed. I have a set of Profile Durango bars on it to get more hand positions. I have been thinking of putting a drop bar on, but the cost of converting to road shifters, derailures etc. is too steep. I have this crazy idea to put a drop bar on and keep the shifters I have. So far the only problem I see is that it will be suicidal to ride in the drops while decending where I will need to feather my brakes more.

Does anyone have any thoughts (other than, "are you nuts!!" I already know I am!!)

I have heard that using bar end shifters may work too. Any thoughts??

Thanks...Bill

Road drop bars are slightly larger in diameter than MTB handlebars, therefore you can forget about mounting anything designed for a MTB to fit on road bars. That goes for your MTB stem too. If you still want drop bars on a MTB frame, consider off-road drop bars......they're designed for cyclocross bikes and look totally cool.......but of course, still only compatible with road shifters & stem....

As George said, it will be iffy at best to get those shifters on a road bar at all. If you get true STI levers you'll need a new front derailleur-those on the Sirrus are designed specifically for flat-bar shifters. Beyond that you'd need one of the various travel adjusters available to make v brakes somewhat more functional when coupled with road levers.

Drop bars with flat bar controls are , like you say, suicidal and totally unusable. Most of the time drop bar riders are holding the brake hoods.
Some cyclo cross bikes come with dual brake levers, the drop ones and an additional one on the tops, usually for the front brake only.

Have you checked out aerobars or those Cinelli Spinnacci bar-lets.

If you just want more hand positions, there is a company, Newk, that makes these drop addons, a big curved bar end. Be warned, they are silly looking.
