General Cycling Discussion - Rode to work for the first time this week...

And let me just say, i hate San Francisco drivers. I usually drive to work, but since it's the summer i decided to try something different. I live on the west side of the city and i work in the financial district across the city. It's only a couple of miles, but there are hills and stuff. BTW, i ride an old 10 speed peugeot.

The ride itself was great, I hope to be able to do it more. However, several drivers felt the need to honk at me even though i have a right to be on the road. Oh well, next time i see a biker when i'm driving, i'll make sure to show him some courtesy.


Also, i think lombardi sports in SF is having a sale on bikes, 0% financing or no payments for 6 months. I'm going to check it out, I'm leaning towards the Felt f85, it's only about 550 bucks, plus with 0% that would be sweet. Anybody ride a FELT?

what's wrong w/ the bike your riding? it sounds like the perfect commuting bike.
bikes get stolen no matter what kind of lock you have, if a thief wants it, it's theirs.

i'd stay w/ what you have.

I would love to be able to ride my bike to work... To bad it's 45 miles one way.

I could easily ride my bike to work every day. I teach at a small rural school 5 miles down the road from my house. However, the major highway I would have to ride on is NOT conducive to cyclists. It is a two-lane highway, no shoulders, and the people driving on it drive like freaking maniacs. They are not looking for cyclists, they are BARELY looking for other cars!

Also, I am responsible for getting my child to school every day, since he cannot drive himself yet. You might say "He could ride his bike to school, too!" but there is no way I would endanger his life by letting him ride on this highway!

No commuting for me.. :(

Nice one Phat bahsturd! Not only are you doing the environment a favour, but you'll be getting more training, more money (less petrol), and a more fun and less stressful (presuming you hit traffic jams) method of getting to work.

Nice going Phat Basturd... which part of this city ?? Sounds like Richmond possibly ?? which streets do you take to get downtown ?? I used to live in the Marine off of Laguna and Lombard... and used to go to school downtown at the Academy of Art buildings on Sutter mostly... yeah i agree.. the drivers there are the worst @!!

You go Phat Basturd! Another positive about bike commuting is the extra calories you burn let you eat more. If for example you want the baby in your belly, or something...

Um, i live in the sunset and work at SF City Hall. I don't have to worry about bike theft, we have a bike room that is locked, it's pretty high tech and stuff.

That felt f85 is looking pretty good, if i could find a used one i'd definitely go for it. Not sure if i want to take the plunge right now and splurge 500 bucks all at once.

Well, from my house i bike down to Lincoln Way, all the way down to Haight street, and from there i follow it down all the way downtown. There's relatively few hills if i go this way.

My hat's off to you, Phat. My sis and her s.o. live in Japantown and my best friends live on the hill just below the Sutro Cancer-Death Tower (;) ). You're a brave guy to bike commute in America's most beautiful, but probably not bike-friendliest, city.

Why not keep the current bike as a commuter and buy the Felt for weekend rides?
