General Cycling Discussion - When will it be "perfect"?

When I bought my Bianchi, it was absolutely perfect.

I put the Bell gel seat cover on it, and now it was perfect.
I put the extra bottle holder on it....now it was perfect.
I put the 8 function speedo on it.....now it was perfect.
I put the tool kit and new bag on it..now it was perfect.
I put an adjustable neck on it and..now it was perfect.

How many levels of perfection are there? I think finally, if I could get a supermodel on it, it just might be perfect.

Lets go and try to do 20 while there is a break in the 2nd Great Flood that has been deluging north Georgia for the last 3 weeks.

It's never perfect. :)

I haven't been able to ride since Sunday. Last week I only road 3 or maybe 4 days. All this rain is making my brain soggy so I'm not really sure.

Maybe if you get a new bike and start this tail chasing all over again, you'll look back fondly on the Bianchi and think: "that was the perfect bike, what did I do?".

Your bike is inherently imperfect and as such can never achieve perfection. Therefore you should buy a newer bike as this will be closer to perfection. Just don't forget to give me your old bike though

Thanx. I don't know if I am quoting something, but that statement just came to mind when I started reading the thread :) All I know is my bike will never be perfect. Even a brand new bike with all the trimmings can be made better in my eyes :)

Ah, you are on the upswing of the search for perfection. You keep adding things to the bike to make it perfect.

Beware the downswing of the pendulum. It starts when you start taking things off the bike to make it perfect. If I just had a lighter seatpost, it would be perfect. If I only had lighter wheels it would be perfect. If I only had a lighter gruppo, it would be perfect. The paradox is that you will be paying far more to take weight off the bike then you ever paid to add things to the bike.

In seeking perfection, you will fail to find it. In looking for perfection, you will not see it. In riding you bike, there will you find perfection.

I agree with RonH, it will never be perfect. We live in an imperfect world, its best to get used to it. Sorry for ruining your dreams.

I got in 9.5 and hit rain just as I was getting to the 800 foot long tunnel under Brushy Mountain. I stuck around for about 45 minutes. With water covered pathway, and slime covered walls, there was no place to sit or lean. I stood there, talking on the cell phone. Finally, I went on to Coots Lake Store, and hit more rain as I was traveling. I had some coffee and some gatorade. I wrung out my socks, the sun came out, and I rode back. I got in 22 miles for the day. I did ride within 10 feet of a beautiful wild turkey today. When I hunt, I can't get within 100 yards of one. They KNOW when hunting season is. :)

Ah, but you miss the point my fine man! Today, as in every other case that I modified the bike, it IS perfect. As if it is cognizant, the bike always rises to meet my perception of what it must do to be my perfect road bike. As long as I am footing the bill, this relationship will continue. :)

I'm sooooo sick of rain as well, rode at lunch on tuesday, so I was quite lucky....

Perfection is a journey, not a destination. Just enjoy the ride.

Trouble is, the journey is up now when it's new, but when those parts start wearing out and need replacement, it's all downhill from there.

I've spent at least as much on 'perfect' goodies for my bike as I did on the bike itself. There comes a point, enforced by either the wallet or the disapproving quirk in a significant other's upper lip, where one must simply stop.

My bicycle is not perfect. I'm perfectly happy with it. No further affordable 'upgrades' will make it more perfect or make me more happy with it.

So now I'm jonesing for the day I can afford a road bike and start this process all over again.

Aargh.

Accessories added or removed will never make a bike perfect. It's when you and the machine become one on the ride that you have reached perfection.

Well, at least that's what I think anyway :)
