so how long should a campy record bottom bracket last? bike is a look 585, with campy record, compact 50/34 front. biker is 5'7 150 lbs. . this bracket has perhaps 9000 miles on it. lbs when i took the bike it for a tuneup felt a little play in the crank, called me to say they need to replace the bottom bracket. Any comments? Just seems to me something like that should last longer than a little more than a year, but maybe i am naive to these things.

Tell them to do nothing and that you'll check it out yourself.

only problem with that is if i knew how to check it out myself i probably wouldn't need to ask this question.
Hard to say.... Wish I could log 9000 miles in a year.

All that's needed is to look at the spindle and cups. If they are smoothly and evenly worn with absolutely no pits then just rebuild with new ball bearings. A broken in bearing runs much smoother than when new. If pitted or unevenly worn it must be replaced. Then monitor regularly both adjustment and smoothness and overhaul more often.
