Folding Bikes - Are any folders available as framesets?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'll sell you a raleigh twenty frameset :) Or, I believe you can still get a swift frame set.

I bought a Swift frameset from Peter Reich a few months ago for $390 plus $50 to ship it. Included was the frame, fork, seatpost, stem and 3 quick releases. Color was black and that's the only color unless you want to pay more.

The Breezer online store also has a frameset:

Nihonric, do you have contact info for buying this frameset (I see the xootr site, but not the original swift link)? Could you also measure and see what is the max distance from the BB to the top of a typical seat with the stock seatpost?

What is a swift frameset warranty?

----

PS - to the original poster, many of us that wanted to get a Bike Friday frameset simply bought the most inexpensive stock offering that they had. I think this was around $680 for the Pocket Tourist, but it appears that that's discontinued (2 qtr 2007), and the New World Tourist at $875 is the least expensive stock option now.

Here's the original Swift folders home page, w/contact info:

That's the site, click on "contact us/links" and you'll find swiftfolders@earthlink.net. It might take Peter a few days to reply but he will. Seat rails to BB center is about 77cm at the seatpost limit; I think the reach will be more limiting than the saddle height. There's tons of info on the Swift thread which convinced me to go with the Swift.

Unless you have a lot of the parts already, it won't be cheaper than buying a complete bike.

Thanks for the note. I found the address yesterday and wrote.

That should be plenty for the seat height.

I´ve got a bunch of parts already, most importantly wheels from a Bike Friday tandem already with Stelvios that can hop over to the swift. So ~$100 total without the wheels and it's running ($20 rear der, $10 chain, $25 crank, $10 BB, $10 brakes, $10 shifter, $10 levers).

This was a neat comparison

Note that on Alex Wetmore's home page that he has sold the Swift and kept the NWT. The article could be improved with more depth about riding impressions.

Just a few comments ...

Wetmore's Swift was the old steel version.

Actually, there have been people who managed to purchase a Bike Friday frameset. Although it takes a bit of cajoling. Take a peek at the YAK groups and look up harvey sachs ...

Are all Swift designs now aluminum? Was there really a significant weight savings? In something that's travelling, I'd prefer steel.

I just got an email from Swift. Framesets are now $700 - ouch!

I don't know whether the $700 estimate is for the steel version; but yes there is a steel version and around a year ago Peter's estimate was that it would cost $200+ more than the aluminum version.

I think that the Aluminum frame saves 1 - 1.5 pounds over the steel version. I know the information is somewhere in the Swift folder thread.

Just saw on EBay a birdy frame ony (no fork) listed. $10.00 to start... Might work for you!

I checked that out, too. Problem is, THERE'S NO REAR TRIANGLE OR FORK INCLUDED! If there was at least a rear triangle, I would get it myself. It only includes the frame without fork or rear triangle.

BTW, I recently got to see the Breezer frame up close. It looked good. My only negative is that the handlepost is a non adjustable one. The seatpost was plenty tall for my 6' body, though. The frame is also only $235 plus shipping.

How do you buy a frame only from them?

The Breezer I saw was a fully built bike. It was the same frame that they sell on the site, though. Breezer has an online store that you can buy the frames from. Follow the link in my earlier post,

I'd be interested in the Raleigh Twenty frameset. LMK how much and some details.

Presumably, one could modify the Breezer handlebar post/mount with an alternative from Dahon.

Its a standard headset, so I guess the answer is yes,
