Why didn't you just buy a complete bike???

MaxBrokeAway

I didnt have the money to shell out a big purchase...i have been buying these parts over a period of time...plus having a custom bike makes it feel a little more personal.

Thanks! Any words of encouragment are welcome! I am new to mountain biking so hearing that I got a good setup is like drinking cool water after a 12 mile trek.

All purchased from ebay

shifters = 35
R derailleur = 30
F derailleur = 10
Frame = 170
headset = 30
seatpost = 24
handlebar = 27
grips = 3
stem = 11
shocks = 90

430 in total

not too bad if that's the whole bike +100 bucks in assembly cables and other unexpected stuff ... the frame is cool, but if you had bought a pre-built bike you may have gotten a better fork.

the pre-builts in my price range at the time only had RST forks and i dont know alot about them but Ive seen them on wal-mart bikes so that was an instant turn off...

Im not sure to take that as a "good job" or a "your a bone head" considering I dont know salsa....kid looks YOUNG!

I'll buy a bike piece by piece someday, but it will probably be comprised of rather highend components/frame.

Cool idea though. You know how to put it all together? ;) (err.. nevermind.. just read that your LBS is doing it.)

Good luck with that. Above and beyond..

Post some pics of the finished product.

On a side note I DO need rims...im looking for solid quality rims that can take both rim and disc brakes, 135mm rear hub thats compatible with shimano 8 speed cassette...if anyone is interested in selling

I built my Trek that way :)

I couldn't take what you are doing .. not having a bike and watching one show up piece by piece... after 1 or 2 parts showed up I'd lose it and take out another credit card and go buy one.

I had another bike to ride while I was building it...it was still torcher

MaxBrokeAway

ahah...actually i did "lose it" -- I was only intending to buy 2 or 3 parts...whoops

Torture.

Not a bad deal on the build-up, imo. That frame is probably better than most Treks in your price range, and the rest of it is pretty much stock Trek bits (why bontrager for so much, btw?), so you can't go too far wrong. If the bike ends up at $530 or so w/build-up by your LBS, you probably could have gotten a marginally better fork and equivalent or better components in a Rockhopper/4500/similar level bike, but like you said, yours is custom, so that's worth something.

The most important thing about any bike is that it has a rider that loves it and loves to ride it. The rest is secondary.

im not sure what you mean why bontrager for so much...i guess you mean the handlebar? its MSRP for 35 + shipping so i thought i got a deal...the grips for 3 bucks was a steal...and so was the stem for 11 IMO

Thanks for the words of encouragment!

single sided fork? :eek: whats the story on these?

MaxBrokeAway
05-20-07, 06:54 PM
its called a "lefty"

Supposed to be desired due to its half the weight of a regular suspension fork...and we all know that the fork is the heaviest part of our bike

salsa
05-20-07, 07:06 PM
plus a lefty has the best lockout I think and you can change a flat quicker.

nice bike maxbrokeaway good luck with it

my question has always been : What are you giving up to save that weight? there has to be a disadvantage for every advantage.

mind you..I have heard only good things about them...Im just weary ;)

MaxBrokeAway

hehe I agree...the way a lefty looks just makes me plain nervous...the disadvantage must not go far beyond looks though because they cost a bundle

im not a big fan of the lefty, they look cool, changin flats is easy as pie, but i felt like it turmed easier to one side(don't remeber which one) also it scared me, because the wheel is only attached on one side, i know its reinforeced, but it still scares me

I dont know the internals...but it cant be as good as a regular fork id guess. No coil/air combos. Can you have adjustments for preload, rebound, dampening and lockout all on one leg?
