Training & Nutrition - 2 Questions from a Forum Newbie :)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey Folks~
I have two questions for the forum, after reading the Coke forum it surfaced a couple things I've been wondering.
One, how much a part do endorphins play in everyday life if you're an active spinning instructor? Can you be a junkie? I mean, I spin 5 times a week and mountain bike every weekend. All of my spinning in Monday through Thursday and if I don't mtb on the weekends, I sometimes get SO down and out. I mean, sluggish, tired, upset and feel slow mentally and physically. Especially when I don't spin either. It seems so hard to get back into it. Do you think that it's a lack of endorphins, or something else?
Also, I can't seem to *start* back on my regular workout/healthy eating schedule after a long and much needed surfing trip to Costa Rica, where I ate terribly and sat around all day long (it was great!). Any thoughts? I've said the words, "I'll start tommorow, for sure," six million times. I'm starting to feel extra lazy. Help!
Oh, and hi. My name is Lauren and I'm a student/spin instructor/dirt lovin' mtb'er from Florida :) :)

Hi and welcome to the forums.:)
i always have a hard time starting again after a break also, i think as the commercial says, " just do it!! ". after a couple days you'll be back in the groove.
surfing trip to costa rica sounds like a blast, i've been wantin to do that for a couple years now.
I'm going through the same thing right now, having just returned from vacation. Actually, I go though that after every vacation!
I just think vacations take you "out of synch" with your normal routine, and when you get back, it's just that my body is "used to" the inactivity. I usually have to jump start myself by just jumping back into my activities again. The first few days (a week or so) can be tough, but just keep at it, and you'll be back in no time!
Good to see you here!

Welcome
"No matter how many pushups you do the hardest is the first" Once I get to the bike or to the gym I love it going is hard.

I am slowly realizing how much that getting out of my exercise routine hurts me when I try to resume it. Today, I heard Lance Armstron say during an interview, that he never, never goes more than 3 days without cycling. If it is good enough for Lance, maybe its good enough for anyone else.

So true.. our brains aren't always in synch with our bodies.
In the distant past I never exercised much apart from smallish bike rides for commuting. I only realized how much cycling is part of me, when I was without a bike for 5 months. But still, I always used to refuse friend's invitations to go out for a bike ride.. was busy, busy. Stupid: it's good for your sense of well-being. Same for eating healthily. I knew it's better for me, but was addicted to junkfood. Nowadays I mostly eat 'clean' foods (viz. few junk foods and small amt of carbs). Days like yesterday, when I somehow crashed and ate too much garbage (overdose of carbs at start of the day and tiredness from sleeping too little made me eat junkfood all day) make me realize how much better i feel on low-carb foods. Next time when I think of eating junkfood I will remember!
Remember how good you feel after exercising hard!
So get off your ass and go to the gym!

Getting started back is like climbing a mountain. If you look at the peak, you groan and think you will never be able to make it, and may just give it up. If you just start by taking a small step and set your goal for the next tree, you will be at the top in no time.
So, don't think about the ENTIRE workout you need to do. Think about doing five bench presses or whatever, start there, and before long, you will have done your entire workout.
Also, I start going crazy if I DON'T workout.

You guys (and girls!) are awesome...thanks for the help. I'll keep you posted on the progress. By the way, GO TO COSTA RICA! All fatty foods aside, that place is paradise. Oh, and bring your bike if you can. You won't imagine the amount of cyclists and mtb'ers I saw there. I'm standing there with my surfboard in the most beautiful place on the planet, wishing I was the one flying down the side of a mountain on my Giant. "You can take the cowboy out of the country..." You know how the saying goes ;) Thanks again!
