Touring - Rear rack for disk brake

A friend of mine bought a nice Devinci Oslo 2007 and would like to get a rear rack for it.
The devinci Oslo frame is set to support disk brake although it doesn`t come with it.
Most of the rear rack that I have seen is not enough large to support this. I know the Oldman mounain is making some but it seems a bit too expensive for her. Do you have any suggestions ? She would prefer to get one with a "Shelf" over it.

I have the disc brake version of the Topeak Explorer rack. Of the not very large selection of disc brake compatible racks, I like this one the best. I don't think it would be good for loaded touring, but I have been using it to haul heavy loads of groceries for the last few years.

I also have the topeak rack. No problems yet. Axiom also makes two disc racks. I had the Odysee for a couple days and hated it, but the journey model they have is much nicer. I wanted that one originally, but the LBS ordered the topeak by mistake and I've been happy with it. I plan to ride the east coast with it and don't expect any problems.

I have a disc brake tourer. It's true that the standard rear racks will interfere with the brake calipers -one possible cheap way (and the way I did it) is to go to your local hardware store and fabricate two extender brackets -pushing the rear rack slightly back. Since rack rails are usually too long, you aren't causing issues with pushing your load back as you simply put the panniers further along the rack rails towards the saddle. Worked fine for me and they definitely feel more than strong enough.

I have the Axiom on my commuter (Kona Dew Deluxe). The only downside is the non-drive side, where the disc brake caliper is, there's a rod that clamps onto the seat stay. Under load, this clamp can slip and actually rest on the brake - making the brake inoperable.

My rig is fairly beat up now, but I've finally got it shimmed with tire boot pieces and rubber cement so it won't slide onto my brake mechanism. I can put ~20lbs. on that side of the rack now without issue.

That was my problem too. Do you have the axiom with the swooping back thingy or the one without.

I have the same rack, I took the bolt out of the top brake caliber, and put the rod of the rack in there with a longer bolt, works great.

When I thought how to solve the problem, I didn’t want to use clamps or to push the rack back using long extender brackets. This is an option if you want simple solution though. I tried to order that rack, but the shop had some groundless problems to charge my credit card so this was problematic.

Finally, I have fabricated two brackets for a standard rear rack, which is a bit wider than usual one. I have found it in our LBS. I think my construction is even better than Topeak Super Tourist Dx Rack, because my rear rack is located as low as possible and the stainless steel brackets are stiffer because of its shape and material.

Tubus's site says that the Logo Explorer model is ideal for frames with disc brake mounts, but show no pictures or details as to how it attaches. I am using an Axiom for now and have customized it for a lower side rail both sides. But Tubus' Explorer and Topeaks Super Tourist Dx is looking very nice to me, if only a way to guarantee fit before getting one or the other.

Yeah, email the touring store--- I don't really know how to exsplain all the work arounds, but Wayne knows them all. Cheap isn't a good way to go here, however. Tubus parts aren't cheap (you're best bet)

Not only that, but that rod goes on the side of the wheel spokes (the other way it can be difficult to properly mount a pannier on that side). If it slips there's a chance that it can get in the way of the spokes => trashed wheel and rider! What my LBS did was apply Loctite liberally to all bolts/nuts after tightening everything down.

Other than that the Axiom rack has worked very well for me (on a GF Kaitai 29").

I have the Coda Elite and I put the Axiom rack on with no problems. See above.

That was my problem too. Do you have the axiom with the swooping back thingy or the one without.

Hi, I attached the photo of titanium rear rack from titerra (titerra.com). It works with lots of disk brakes.
