In 3 months I have skidded away the rubber of my GP 4000 reat tyre. Anyone got any suggestions on a more skidding-durable tyre?
I think 3 months of use from a skiddin tire is exceptionally good. Lots of tires will hold up for only 3 weeks, if that.
And do a search!

gatorskin, or skid less and just pedal to a stop.. i ran the same vittoria zaffiro cheapie tire for over 6 months on a fixie by relaxing on the unnecessary skidding.
I´v heard good things about Conti 4-sesons

If your killing tires in 3 months, a cheap tire is the way to go,
These are nice for $15.00 CDN.

randonneurs. thread over.
THANK YE!
not only those but you can sometimes find the version with a reflective stripe. and you can also find folding versions. some people dont like the 28c size but if you like to skid.....you sort of dont have an option.

if you're going to skid like crazy, just buy a case of the cheapest tires you can find and shred the hell out of them.

you can either buy a cheap tire and be ready to replace it often or spring for somthing nicer and keep it for longer. though, i would always run the more expensive tire so that i dont have to worry about it

just a noob question, how much do average tires cost??

zephyr - why do you think nicer means they will last longer?
in my experience more expensive actually means lighter/thinner which means they in general they will wear out even quicker.

just depends on which 'nice' tire you buy. gatorskins are a nice tire with a good track record of being able withstand the abuse of skids fairly well. armadillos and soma everwears are other such examples.
in my mind, it's worth the peace of mind to have a nice tire that won't flat out ever time you go across a ****ty street filled with broken glass / sharp pebbles / other annoying pieces of road debris, so i like gatorskins for that reason - i have yet to flat one. same with armadillos and the soma everwear i have on back right now (*cross fingers*).
it's also worth the better 'road feel' you get with more expensive tires, and the lower rolling resistance. $30 ever few months for new tires pales in comparison to what you'd pay for a monthly gas bill.
but that's my own personal philosophy and doesn't pertain to universal truth, so buy whatever floats your boat. and if you're actually running brakes, all of this is irrelevent if you use them instead of skidding.

Time for my stock answer to this stock question: Specialized All Condition Pro. They wear forever, handle in a most excellent fashion, and have excellent flat protection without riding like wood.

yeah your totally right. i meant that he could go with a super durable "nice" tire, like the ones people have mentionned, or go ultra cheap and replace more often

depends whos ass.
But, they ride really badly, if you care about that. I run mine @90psi though. They just don't wear out, skidding or riding wet through 100m of broken glass (after a street party, this has happened), still no punctures.
and can someone please PLEASE tell me what is a good loose-ball or sealed hub (not bloody formula or dimension) rear for ~$100, and where could I get it.

i believe specialized all conditions ARE produced by Cheng Shin. not sure about the Specialized armadillos, but likely they are Cheng Shin product also.

if you could find the miche primato hub rear only it would be under that... or you could spring for the set for maybe ~130$ CAN.

Armadillos!!
Really? I just replaced a tire with Armadillos, and it seems to be wearing down just as quickly. Of course, this isn't a controlled scientific experiment, so I can't really say for sure. For one, my previous tire was used primarily in winter, where I wasn't in contact with asphalt as much. But I got to say, it looks like I'm chewing down the Armadillos pretty quickly, which makes for an expensive gimmick. I'm using handbrakes from now on.
