View Full Version : You ever feel silly...
Does anyone else ever put their race wheels on the day before the race and just feel silly doing a really relaxed ride on them? I know that when I see some guy tooling around on $2000 wheels, I laugh a little.
At the same time, I love riding my bike with fast wheels. It just feels so damn good.

Nope. I've a race next Sunday (OnionMan, in Walla Walla, WA) and so this Tuesday is a check-out ride in full kit with all the toys on the Lucero (rear disc wheel cover, 808 front, LG Rocket helmet, new tires & tubes) and I'd just as soon discover a problem on Tuesday than Saturday afternoon 200+ miles from home.
I'd rather be the guy tooling around in $2000 wheels the day before a race than the guy freaking out on the morning of a race because something was wrong with them...
I saw some guy last weekend riding around the local lake trail, which is primarily used by walkers, strollers, roller bladers and mountain bikers with a P3. You pretty much cannot build any speed because of the people and the fact that the trail is not straight at all. Maybe he was just checking stuff out? Or maybe he was just showing off his bike...?? Dunno, but I get your point, riding around slowly on your go-fast stuff, not 'going fast'. =]

At the same time, I love riding my bike with fast wheels. It just feels so damn good.I feel the same way! I just got my HED wheel and Assos jersey the other week so I took them out for a test ride. I was scheduled for a slow recovery ride so that's exactly what I did. So here I am, riding down the road at around 12 mph, spanking new wheel and shiny new race outfit feeling a bit self-concious. :o
But since I was wearing my helmet and shades, I'm sure no one recognized me so what the hell. I gotta do what I gotta do!:)

Yea, I just thought of that. I just sold my spinergy stealths down the road and purchased a Blackwell Research 10mmF and DiscR. All of my riding is done fairly fast paced over long distances but I don't think I will look right riding on my local HWY with a rear disc wheel. :(). Oh well, it could be worse...Right?:(
Yeah, I think it's totally necessary to ride wheels before races for diagnostic purposes, but I just think of how goofy I must look strolling along through the city on Hed 3s.

If you're not going to play with your toys...what's the point in having them?
I borrowed a friends tri bike last year for a race. Had a pair of HED3's. Rode it to work and back once to get some more time in on it. Probably looked real silly on a tri bike with a light at 5am headed to work. Haha.
