Mountain Biking - Good deal? or Junk?

I have been offered this bike brand new for $650. I've been looking for an entry level mountain bike, more like a step above entry level, for a while now. I think the components are decent, but I don't hear a lot about schwinn. Here is the link, any input would be helpful. The bike retailed for $1150. Its a 2006 model.

Again, i'm looking for something sturdy, but I'm not going to be doing anything insane with it. My riding is more on the casual side.

Thats actually not that bad of a deal, at all. Schwinn gets a bad name because they sell A LOT of super low end bikes. However, because of this (same applies to mongoose, gt, ironhorse.....) they can offer better parts spec than competitors for similar or less price.

However, the most important thing would be to make sure the bike fits you right (if not, it could be the most exspensive bike in the world but still ride/feel liek crap).

Ya i've ridden several other bikes and this one feels really nice. A few people have told me it would be a solid entry level bike that I can build on. Thanks for the feedback.

I personally would never even think about getting a URT (unified rear triangle) bike.

Can you elaborate? Are they absolutely terrible? Are they decent for a casual rider? What is your riding style?

that bike is actually more than a casual rider would need, and yes it is upgradeable. If it feels good, go for it.

No, they aren't.

it is equipped the same as a trek fuel ex8 really. except sram instead of shimano....same fork and same brakes and the trek is about 400 bucks more, this years lineup it would be similar to the ex6. It looks nice to me.

How should we know, but it should be. If you are buying a full suspension bike, you should seriously consider what type of rear suspension it has. URT was a failed experiment from a decade ago, IMO, and for the most part forgotten by most reputable bike companies. Why schwinn and a few other companies still fiddle with it is a mystery to me.

An x9 rear derailler, not bad...sole brakes hm...rst rear shock, uh oh.

First, it isn't a urt bike. Iso drive is schwinn's name for I-drive. Can't use I-Drive terminology on the schwinn, I-drive is GT's name for the same suspension design.

Second, it's a decent bike.

I broke some guys Schwinn Rocket when doing a small bunny hop at a skatepark. It snapped at the right chain stay. I think he got it warrantied, but I have not talked to the guy since.:o

Aren't the rear triangles in those bikes still uniform? I know they have different suspension linkages, but in all of them, the rear triangle itself is solid and does not move, unlike fsr or a 4 bar. Also, wouldn't the gt mongoose and all "single pivots" still fit under YOUR definition?

The URT bike has the entire drivetrain(BB,cranks,ect) on the rear swingarm. The driveline distance stays the same becuse the rear axel and BB move as one peice. No, single a pivot bike does not equal URT.

so, would that be like ecd, i drive.....
