Growing up I always hated to run, most likely because they forced us to in school. But I think once I built up stamina it would be something I really enjoyed. I never thought I would like cycling until I went out for a ride one day.

How do I go about building up endurance? Just go out and start running? I can run a mile right now and would like to get to 5 then 10 miles.

I know there are marathon training programs online, but I figured someone on here has been in my situation and can offer some advice. marathontraining.com looks like a good website to learn on.

Thanks!:D

lets see, grow up in a small southern town. wear leg braces, get chased by locals, learn to run fast. go to college, go to nam, run across the country a coupla times. oh and don't forget to get a job on a shrimp boat somewhere in there.

Cross training is always good. Get yourself a good pair of running shoes. I am assuming you have checked with your doctor before starting. A place you might want to start looking is at the following site. Just remember not to overdo it and continue your cycling.

I used to run marathons before my knees gave out.

Start small do your mile run say three times a week for a couple of weeks then make one run two miles etc.

If I can find the old endurance chart for building up I will post great for runners.

Make sure you have good shoes, make sure you are running properly, and don't be afraid to build up slowly. Success won't happen overnight. But you will see plenty of improvement as you train.

There isn't much more to it.

This may be Foo, but I'll give a serious answer a shot.

Step one - check with your doctor.
Step two - get proper shoes for running.
Step three - do some jogging, and when you get tired, walk. When you are ready to jog again, go back to it. Start off 3-4 days a week and give yourself a day to recover. Start off jogging/walking for about 20 minutes, and add 5 minutes per workout a week when you can jog for 10 minutes without stopping. When you get up to 40 minute workouts, hold off on increasing the duration. Focus on good form once you're able to jog the entire duration. Don't worry about speed - that will come naturally as your fitness and form improve.

If you're stiff or achy, don't push it, but don't bail on your workouts. Sometimes the best thing for stiffness is getting the muscles warmed up and moving.

If you experience pain, back off. If you're able to walk without pain, do that. If not, get yourself taken care of.

Good luck with it. I need to get myself back into running some. I believe it will help my cycling noticeably.

FWIW, I was more of a sprinter-type of runner in HS. Most I was ever able to run at one time was five to eight miles. I was much better with explosive short runs of up to 440 yds. Probably just the way my muscle fibers are.

Even if my knees didn't give me so much hell when running, I'd probably never take up distance running, and find that cycling is a good way to keep enjoying my sprints, even as I ride "long" distances.

thanks for the quick replies! I just went out and ran 1.3 mile in 8:30. It feels really good knowing I was able to do that, even though it is only a mile!:D I'll read as much as I can, I didn't even know there was proper form to running!

Don't forget shorter distance sprints. Some say they are better for your body. Ever try running up and down hills? This guy (http://www.mattfurey.com) recommends it.

You're already running under 7 minutes per mile. Forget all the stuff I recommended, you're past it already. Ride your bike to Boulder and look for a personal trainer. :p

i'll throw my $0.02 in here...

if you haven't already, spend the cash on serious shoes. if you have a good runners supply store, go there so they can fit you right. barring that, spend an hour or two in a shoe store and try on every brand of runing shoe they have until you find a pair that feels just right.. a lot of people have bad knees from running cause they overtrain, overuse their good shoes, or never spend the money on a good pair to begin with. shoes are cheaper than knee replacement surgery.

also, don't run/train through an ache or pain. running injuries are generally unforgiving if you ignore them.

i avoid bringing music along as it seems to make me want to run to the rythm, rather than what my body is telling me. some people like that though. whatever floats yer boat.

good luck, and don't skimp on the shoes. :-)

So you have the urge to run? My advice is:

Lay down until the urge passes.

If you weigh more that 47 pounds, your feet, knees, ankles and shins will thank you.

Buy the neighbor a big, mean dog like a Rotweiler or Pitbull. Pay for guard dog training.
After about 6 months, go out of your house with a piece of bacon in your back pocket.
Trust me...you will learn to run and fast.

I have to say, I've been running everyday for the last 2 weeks, and before that about 3-4 times a week. Some days I'll run 5-6 miles and go for an hour, and some days I'll go for 2-2.5 miles and feel burned out. Right now I have an intense pain in the back of my left calve. Moral of the story, is to find some kind of program and get as much advice as possible. I'm still in the process of figuring out how I want to approach this. I'm told to easily go into things, but sometimes I literally can go for 6 miles, then somedays my ankles and feet hurt so bad I HAVE to stop.

I ran all through high school and I coached my high school's track team for two years. Let think of exactly I want to say. I'll get back to you.
