UPDATE, 5/29/2007:

They've started actual work on the bridge. This morning, they were damming the water and draining it from around the bridge footings......I'll post updates as I can figure out what they're doing.....

For those of you who commute on the W&OD between Reston and Vienna...I'm sure you've been wondering about the Piney Branch bridge situation - it's been out of commission since the foundation got washed out during last June's heavy rains. I contacted the NV parks dept, and got a reply....I also noticed that a piece of heavy equipment has been moved into place at one end of the bridge....which makes this reply even more timely - here's the quote:

The contractor for the repair of the bridge abutment has been moving in his heavy equipment and storage containers this week. The work that was done last July was just to prevent the bridge from falling in the creek while a plan was made to make repairs. Hopefully they will actually begin working shortly. It will take a while as the one bridge abutment has to have a new foundation and be completely rebuilt. The other one will have additional protection around its foundation to prevent it from being undercut.

Rick Stevens, Manager
W&OD Railroad Regional Park

So, looks like it will get under way soon, and we'll have a new an improved bridge crossing when they're done.....

The Friends of the W&OD website says the work is scheduled to be completed in August '07. I expect it will be ready next spring.

They're working on it every day now, but I wouldn't place any bets as to when it will be completed. They're completely rebuilding one side and shoring up the other. I'll be looking forward to the day when we can post that it's complete - the detour has gotten a little old.

UPDATE, 9/10/07 -

Progress is slow....but today, I noticed that they have completed the stone facing on one of the banks - I'll check the other on the way home. There appears to be a base for a center support, but that may not be used. It may mean that they're getting close to being done!

I just went past there this afternoon, and didn't notice any changes, but then I wasn't really looking. There weren't any construction guys around at 3:00pm anyway.

I've almost gotten used to this little mini off-road adventure with my skinny-tired bike. I've almost lost it more than a few times catching a front wheel in the loose sand they like to pour over the trail once in awhile...

Both sides' foundations appear to be complete. I guess the next step is to repair the bridge deck. I don't know what that middle concrete footing is for, other than flow control for the water.

The detour was fairly smooth this morning, probably due to the rain yesterday. I hate it when it gets rutted, then they add more sand - I've gotten a front wheel slipping sideways more than once.

UPDATE, 09/18/2007

It's fixed! It's fixed! I didn't see the detour sign this morning, and as I rode over the newly repaired bridge, I took a look down at the old detour - it's hard to believe we've been riding that for over a year.....
