When going on a ride for fun, I bring a spare tube, tire levers, a multitool, pinking shears, a chain tool, water, headlight & blinkies, a top hat, some change, a knife, a pump, and sometimes my wallet and a cell phone.

When commuting, add to that panniers, a rack trunk, an AK-47, handlebar bag, chain lube, a change of boots, a belt, a Faberge egg, three pterodactyls, reading material, a sweater (I need to take that out, sweater weather is done for the year...), and change the "sometimes a wallet and cell phone" to always the wallet and two cell phones.

I've actually ditched the multitool in favor of the right sized allen wrenches (2) and a leatherman. It seems that every flat I get I gotta pull something out of the tire. Once it was a dry wall screw...I used the phillips head screw driver.
