In a little over a month I'll be in San Francisco for about 10 days for a little trip with my wife and two daughters aged 4 and 6. I've already booked a hotel for 3 nights in San Francisco and another by the airport for the night before we fly back home.
What I would like to do is explore the area north of San Francisco, i.e. wine country, the redwood and sequoia forests, the coastal region, but I would like to find an Inn within 3 hours driving time from San Francisco to base myself out of. My preference is for an Inn as it gives my daughters a little more leg room when we need to head back 'home' to rest but I'm open to any other ideas.
Anyone have any recommendations for accommodations as well as for a general area I can base myself out of so that I can drive around to visit wine country, the coast and the big trees?

Thee is an Inn in Valley Springs. It's two hours from Yosemite, and about 40 minutes from Big Trees. Not really in to wine but I think there are some winneries around that area. link (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g33215-d578101-Reviews-10th_Green_Inn-Valley_Springs_California.html)
It's also near the golf course. It's about three hour drive from SF during non-rush hour traffic.

Id suggest you search in Calistoga or perhaps Santa Rosa. Calistoga is for being pampered.;)

Calistoga is just 1.5 hours north of San Francisco it seems so that's excellent.
That last one looks very nice but is also very expensive! I'll start looking in that general area.

No plans to cycle. I won't be bringing any bikes with me but if I can sneak away for an afternoon of mountain biking, I may do that. That would be the extent of it, though.

Search the Calistoga area. Its very beautiful, and lots to see as well as lots in a short distance. My wife and I went for our honeymoon. Got mudbaths, massages, winetasting, great food all over. You may enjoy a night on the wine train out of Napa also, it can be a great dinner.

Another option: the Black Heron Inn (http://www.blackheroninn.com/index.html) in Point Reyes Station. It's about an hour north of the city, an hour west of Sonoma/Napa, and right off Highway One. You'd also be very close to the redwoods in Muir Woods (http://www.nps.gov/muwo/) and Samuel Taylor Park, as well as Stinson Beach (http://www.nps.gov/archive/muwo/stbe/) and the coast. And if you do get a chance to mountain-bike, you'd be ten miles from Bolinas Ridge Trail (http://www.btcmarin.org/maps/maps_bo_ridge.htm).
