So nice to have my Kaitai back. For now, it is my weekday ride and the Reno, my weekend distance ride.

One of my favorite local places is "The Berm" - a mile long earthen sea wall tasked with keeping the Pacific out of the seaside links. The south end of the berm leads to a rutted gravel "road" -Mori Point Road- heading east or -further south- the trails leading up to Mori Point, itself.

At the start of the main climb up are two tree stumps looking north where I often stop and just drink in the beauty of where I'm luck enough to live. I've missed riding the berm since my Fisher has been in the shop so that's the first place I headed for last night. As I approached the stumps it hit me that the Kaitai is a fine off-road bike that I don't take off-road enough. So.... what the heck, I decided to just climb that trail to the top of the Point. Or try to anyway :(

Seems this loose dirt path is deeply rutted in many places with an exposed irrigation pipe running its length (irrigation pipe? huh?). I learned I am not a dirt climber. Yet. I'd slip, I'd slide, I'd fall. Repeat often. Finally scapred up the inside of my left knee, falling flat on my face as a cutie jogger went by. I had the biggest smile on my face. It was so much fun! :D

But on this night, the trail won and I turned around to go back down to Mori Point Road -no small feat in itself- and found a less steep trail off to the side that parallels the road. I often take this path west but never east. Last night I did. I take my victories where I find them.

I will go back, though, and I *will* climb that hill. Maybe pumping my tires up to 90psi isn't the best idea for this sort of thing....

SKT,

One of the tricks to climbing on loose gravel is to find that balance of getting as much of your weight over the back tire as possible without lifting the front. If you are running road tires on the bike, that is not going to help.

Oh shoot, I had even considered the tire type. Duh!
OK, that path might not be the way up but there are others.

If you can walk the trail without falling over- or losing grip or stopping- It is climbable on a bike. Just put one thought in your head- It is a lot more difficult to push a bike up a hill than to ride up it. Although I do not attempt any long climbs at more than 25%.

Of course- if it is very steep you may have to have a rest or two on the way up. That's not a problem but restarting is. Point the bike across the trail at about 45 degrees and make sure the rear wheel is on firm ground- Then pedal. Works everytime unless the trail is covered in wet clay.

Also, be careful of that drinking in nature stuff. I'm not going to get on a high horse here, but everyone knows it's not wise to mix biking and drinking. Just sayin.

See? Now, that -I think- is the real problem. It was so nice out last night, I was just in La-La Land

Stepfam -
You're so right. I learned that stopping is easy, restarting is hard. I did manage to intuit the starting on an angle idea... unfortunately, if I went more than 3 or 4 feet, I'd run, nose-first, right into a rut. I don't actually know what the angle was but it was pretty steep. I do think the trick is to take another path.

You live near one of the most famous bombing runs in the country. Get some Panaracers, put no more than 40 PSI in them, get a full-face helmet, fire off a snot-rocket or two, and do some crunk.

Check out Pete Fagerlein's site. For Pacifica the video is http://www.mtbvideos.net/video/aweebitocrack.mpg.

Enjoy.

Whoa. I hadn't watched that video for a long time. 1) You might want to turn the volume down. The lyrics are a bit harsh. 2) You'll need to trade in you KaiTai for a big hit machine. It'll be worth it....

I had the volume off since I'm OTJ right now... I don't know if they said where that was, I didn't recognize it. It had to be the south end of town. In any event, it looked inTENse. And fun!!!

Uhhhhh.... no. I'm not sure at all.
I did see her at the top of the hill coming my way just before my big splat.
Luckily, I have no pride.

Let's be careful with the sexism and innuendo around here.
