Today I did the longest ride I've ever done on my Raleigh Twenty. I went just a hair under 60 miles at an average of a little better than 14 mph. That's pretty good, considering I had 2 serious climbs (both around a mile long, one at a 6% grade average and the other at 9% grade average) and tons of rolling hills. I know that this may not be very impressive to some, but I was injured for a month and a half and couldn't ride for all of April and the first week of May. I'm doing the Fingerlakes tour in June, which is 82 miles with some serious climbing. I'll tell you how my Twenty and I faired when it's over. :)

60 at an average of 14 isn't bad at all considering the weight of a 20. How do you have it tricked out?
Good luck in the Finger Lakes. Those Gorges are pretty tough.

I'm pretty happy with my average speed, especially when you add the extra few ounds of liquids, bike tools and rear rack I was also sporting. Here's the list of mods:
SRAM 24 speed dual drive
SPD pedals
Aluminum Wheels
Schwalbe Stelvio Tires
Shimano Sora Shifters
V-Brakes
Suspension Fork
Sugino Track Cranks W/ 54 tooth chainring
25-11 8 Speed Cassette
Specialized Avatar saddle
Braize-ons for V-brakes in the rear
Rear right seat stay was cut out and rewelded to give more space for the chain on the smallest cog.
Never mind the weight of the Twenty - that is secondary to your achievement of doing it after so long off the bike! I know I struggled the first week of resuming my 56km round trip commute after having a 4-week overseas holiday which included a flu.
My call is great going! I suspect you will be cruising the 82miles.

Thanks Jur,
I was very worried that I didn't have enough time to get back into shape. I still wish I had an extra week before my big ride though. This time last year I was averaging 16-17 mph on sub 30 mile rides instead of the 14.5-15 I'm doing now, but what can you do. I'm not going to worry about my speed and make sure to stop at the rest stops, which are at wineries, BTW. :) Is wine proper fluids for a long ride? Don't answer that,

If you are road cycling, why don't you replace the front suspension for a rigid lighter fork?

I was thinking about it, but I do like the smooth ride with the suspension fork and I already have a 'go fast' bike that weighs in under 19lbs. I've also done a couple club rides that averaged 20mph on the bike as it is.
I do have to say, I've considered changing out the fork and ditching the sram dual drive system for lighter components to see how much lighter I could make the bike. What keeps me from doing it is the price of components and the fact that I really enjoy the bike in its current condition.
