I searched a few keywords and found several similar threads...but not the direct answer I'm looking for. So my apologies for another lame "will it work" thread.

I have a 9-speed 105 triple set-up. I'd been kicking around the idea of a compact crankset. I was able to pick up a Sram Rival compact for a good price...but now I'm not sure it'll actually work smoothly without changing out some other parts. My primary concern: the crankset (or at least the chainrings) are stamped 10-speed only.

I have a compact specific FD (FSA) that might help (better chance of working smoothly than the triple FD I would think)...but the chainrings have me concerned. And for the price of swapping out the chainrings, I'd probably rather sell the Rival set (hopefully for about what I paid with lesson learned) and go with something else. I'm assuming the new Tiagra-level version of Shimano's compact crankset comes with 9 speed rings?

The 10 Speed SRAM rings will work fine for your nine speed application.

In addition you will likely find the triple FD will work ok
with the compact as well. FSA rates their compact as
9/10 spd (both) and other posters here have found
their prior FD to work fine (various types).

I just put a SRAM Rival compact crank on my 9 speed Dura-Ace setup. I needed to change the FD, and I had to add chainring spacers to the large ring...when I was in the small ring, the chain rubbed against the large ring when using the 11t & 12t cogs. I did also put a 10 speed chain on, it didn't help much with the rubbing, but I do find the rear shifting to be smoother!?!?

Does anyone know if the "rubbing" issue on the compact crank exists with full 10 speed systems???
