View Full Version : Switch a 26" tandem to 700C?

I have a KHS Tandemania Comp frame that I'd like to switch its 26" wheels for 700C

I test fit some 700C wheels on it and they clear fine. I actually think the frame might be the same between the KHS 26" and 700C models. Is there any danger in doing the switch?


The whole drivetrain on the bike is absolutely terrible. 2 times now we've had to limp home in singlespeed because the derailleurs have gone awry. Going to scrap the whole drivetrain and replace it and since the rear hub is freewheel, I want to replace it with a freehub hence my desire to switch the wheel out to 700C


Also planning to get rid of my drum brake, let me know if anyone is looking for one.

With disc brakes the only problem would be frame/tire clearance. If the frame is not set up for disc brakes, you might run into problems getting the brakes pads lined up with the rims. Further, if you have/use v-brakes and if you get the pads to line up with the rims, you would still have less force (for the same hand pressure applied) between the pads and the rims.

Why not stick to 26"?

Currently has V-brakes, was going to replace with single pivot sidepulls

I'd maybe be more inclined to stick with 26" if I could find a tire narrow enough. Currently have 1.25" on there and never seen tires less than that.

Continental Grand Prix. 26 x 1" . never used them on the tandem but have on the MTB. Currently for road use on the "T" I use Continental Sport Contact in 1.3 and these are a high pressure tyre. They roll better than the Schwalbe Marathons in 1.4 that I used to use but not certain about durability yet.

- Hutchinsons' "Tom Slick 2" is available in 26x1.0
- Primo "Racer" is available in 26x1.0 and 26x1.1 (Those are high pressure tires. I have the 20x1 version on my folding bike.)
