I have been looking for the thread where TG explains why a tandem should never be put on a repair rack by the top tube. I cannot find that thread!
Can anyone point to it for me?
Thanks!
Ginny

I clamp our tandem on the rear couplers surrounded by an old t-shirt. I also have the front of the tandem supported by a fixed object. I never hang the tandem supported solely by the workstand. I actually saw a top tube get dented by doing this. It was a sick feeling by all involved.
Hmmmmm.... Maybe I should stop doing that :) I would balance it on the stand by the [padded] top tube to do routine repairs and lube.
The Cannondale has a good [tripod style] kickstand, so i can rotate wheels cranks and such while it's on the ground. It's just hard getting down there to work . Maybe i'll just use a stool to sit :)
For me, it works to clamp the stoker post and let the front wheel rest on the ground (all metal parts).
It is not a good idea to clamp any bike in a repair stand on the frame. while it may not hurt some. It is a bad habit to get into.
The seat post is the best place. I clamp my tandems there and either let the front wheel sit on the ground [as waterrockets suggest, or place it on a stool.

I often use the Quickstand from Performance Bike. Small, cheap ($15) and it doesn't clamp to your frame.
Ginny,
Last year our LBS was performing a quick adjustment of the cables on our month old Trek T2000 when they clamped the frame by the top tube behind the captain's saddle. The fame was damaged beyond repair. We were not pleased but, with the help of the folks at Trek and the LBS, we were off to a tandem rally in less than two weeks.
