OK - Dumb question - I am replacing the stem and handlbar on a Cannondale r600. The current stem is Cinelli. How do I determine if it is threaded or non threaded?

A picture is easier :)

The one on the bottom is a quill for a threaded fork, the one on the top is a stem for a threadless fork.

Some Cinelli stems and bars use a 26.4mm-diameter bar. Don't mix & match your bar and stem diameters... stick with matched sizes, is my advice.

The picture above speaks it all.

Do not worry too much about the 25,4 comment. Also 3T made some 25,4 years back. It is true but those are very rare nowdays and chances are you are buying from shops carrying the newer stock. Most bars now are either 26.0 or 31.8. You can clearly see the difference.

what about 25.8mm clamps. do they work with 26.0 bars?

Cinelli has since standardized on 26.0 in place of 26.4, but there are still 26.4's out there, and hotch may have one of them.

I've seen broken stems result from mismatching, during my 12-year career as a bicycle mechanic. You do NOT want to be the rider whose stem's handlebar clamp breaks due to a mismatch of diameters.

To answer your first question - Threaded stems go inside the fork-tube. Threadless stems clamp around the outside fo the fork-tube. Just as the picture shows.

If you have a threaded stem, you can also get a converter so you can use standard non-threaded stems with a threaded fork. Then you have alot more stem choices open to you, they are about $10.

I gotta Cinelli Bar and threaded stem. The only stem that fully worked on those bars that was threaded was the Cinelli one.
