Yeah, where do you ride to stay cool? Last year, I rode between Fairfield and Vacaville in 90+ degree weather. Not doing that again. Felt ill from heat stress for a couple of days.

The same routes as the Memorial saturday ride.

What, you don't want to work on your tan?

Being an island boy, I was born with a tan!

The coast between San Francisco and Santa Cruz is usually cool; sometimes 40F cooler than San Jose.

Oh, that must have been during the cold spell we had. ;)

It's not so much where as when. I've been known to head out at 6 am so I can be back before the heat kicks in. Although I'm as likely to go out at 6 pm, when it can be 106* or so. It's much like riding into an oven -- but at least it's a dry heat.

I think I'll ride in the East Bay whenever I want to work on my farmer tan.

+1 on the early AM, which has the additional advantage of being relatively windless.

Yeah, definitely early. It's a lot easier now that the sun is up early. You can get a good 3+ hours in before work if you want.

But, if I can't ride early, I do try to hit the shadier routes, and avoid the very exposed ones. The coast is usually pleasant, and coming back via Tunitas Creek is a good break from the sun (it's still not an easy climb, but the scenery takes your mind off of that a little).

Come over to Half Moon Bay and ride down Hwy 1 or any of the myriad coastal hills. Lots of beautiful trails to ride. Cool weather, beautiful scenery, low traffic. Can't be beat.

I ride in the valley where its known to get hot. Ride faster and your sweat will be more effective.

I have found that riding in Arizona and Riverside County CA for a few years, makes other places feel cool when it gets a little warm. (Plus, I love the heat! Bring it on!) Blessings.

I love the heat - and if it is cool in the Berkeley Hills I'll usually drop down Wildcat to the bears, etc. just to keep warm. Can't stand being cold!

Yesterday it was in the high 80s here in Benicia, now I'm shivering in my t-shirt. Global warming?

I ride the same area, but earlier if I can. When it's an early evening club ride I just suffer. I carry plenty of water, many riders don't carry enough when it gets hot and get ill like you did. Be careful, the heat can kill you if you don't properly hydrate.
