I have old shmano 105 brake shoes... I am out of brake shoes and need a replacement.. But the LBS has to order these pads for me, unfortunately for me LBS here only stock MTB parts and road parts have to be ordered and are very expensive... So the pads will be arriving next week.(hopefully).

So I am planning to use the old 105 brake shoes(they are 7yrs old) but were only slightly worn..

Does time affect braking performance? Can these old pads damage my rim? I'm concerned because this is a new rim(a newly built wheel actually).. BTW the rim is AL (Rigida).

Thanks.

I would use the old ones , just clean & shape the working surface by rubbing them on a peice of medium emery paper (sand paper) held on a flat top.
Ps : my daughter calls me Mr. Budget Cyclist :D :p :D

Good advice from greywolf, just remember to remove any residual grit from the pads. I make brake pads last a long time using this method too.

My wife calls me Mr. Cheepass. :p

I will use any brake shoes although I swear by Koolstop.

My wife is nonexistent at this point in my life!
