Southwest - Where to ride in Phoenix area?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'll be spending two weeks in Phoenix next month. I'd like get some riding time in while I'm there (either road or off-road). I don't know the area. I'll be staying at the Four Points Sheraton Metrocenter. Any place nearby to rent bikes? Any parks in the area where I could ride off-road (that are not too technical)? Any group road rides in the area that go at an easy to moderate pace?

Check this club for info on bike shops and rental places, dig in a bit and you will find links to many other cycling resources in the Valley - also can join them for weekend rides - pace from easy to fast.

South Mountain park has some non-technical off road rides - such as Desert Classic (on south, south east side) which goes partly around the base. Some around McDowell Mt. too. Desert Classic is the only one I've ridden though on cyclocross bike.
this link seems to have descriptions of mtb trails all over AZ:

Its gonna be warm, so riding time will be ideally in the mornings.

Best bet is to just ride the canal...if you're near metrocenter it crosses right by there and you can log some miles:
here's a nice map...note the canal crosses town

If you go to www.mapmyrun.com and do a search for rides around Phoenix, there are quite a few, too. (Yes, it's mapmyRUN, but you can choose to search for bike rides, also! :D)
