I guess I decided to do this for a couple of reasons:
(1) the time when I was commuting in my life I felt
like I could do just about anything and (2) it adds
so many more miles to my yearly total.
It was gorgeous out there. And with hardly anyone else
up I could make really good time in terms of speed.
Here are the stats:
Left @ 6:06 A.M.
First three miles took about 11:55 (19 mph roughly)
Time from Start to downtown MUT exit (23:49)
Time from Start to outskirts of downtown (32:00)
Time from Start to work bike garage (34:09)
Speed stats: Average 15.2 mph, max 20.0
Distance 8.17 miles
Some of the things really fought against me in terms
of making good time:
(1) Breaks in the MUT for car traffic.
It wasn't too bad but at major streets I had to
wait a minute or two and that kind of stinks.
(2) Traffic downtown (even at 6 a.m. - insanity)
This was by and large my greatest delay. From
the MUT to the outskirts of downtown to the bike
garage I was plagued with cars and pedestrians.
I couldn't go nearly as fast as I wanted due to
this. The actual commute in was great, but doing
the dodging of traffic wasn't so hot. Oh well.
(3) Locking up the bike, stowing my gear, shower, etc.
That locker room we have is very popular and from
what I can see most of the other bike commuters
gets in the office even earlier than I do.
The funny thing is - I was leaving the locker room
for the elevators upstairs (our locker room is on
the basement 2nd floor of the underground parking
garage believe it or not) and this Audi pulls in
and it's the CEO of the company! Talked with him
a bit - he asked about how the commute was and such.
Kind of neat.
