Southern California - Burnt Griffith Park Ride - May 23rd

Since this is Wednesday, I decided to create a separate thread than the Thursday night GP ride thread on this.

Joel and I are going to ride in Griffith Park tonight and "try" to get up into the canyons. I'm taking my camera in hopes that we will be successful. Anyone else who wants to join is welcomed. We are meeting in the Zoo Parking Lot, closest to the Zoo and Gene Autry (don't know what letter that is) between 6:30 - 7:00pm. :D

I went to GP on Monday and was not able to get into any of the canyons due to the rent-a-cops at every entrance. I ended up just doing the ol boring LA river ride then going home. I hope you and Joel can get up to tha canyons and do a better job of sneaking up there.

I was thinking of leaving work at around 4 and going back and doing some flat riding today round the GP open areas. I have my bike in the car.

Yeah...this AM they wouldn't let me onto the south-bound side of Zoo Drive past the golf course. I'm assuming they're waiting to see if that hillside slides on down anytime soon. I don't know about any of the other canyons as I've never been in them.

Vermont is open up to the Roosevelt golf course it is near the Obs - I just called and asked. Commonwealth Canyon is closed and that is the back road. I guess getting up the golf course is the easy part beyond that I cant see a way to get there on a map, unless you are bringing mountain bikes.

:eek: Gosh...now we're hitting guards, getting arrrested, thrown in the slammer...when all I want to do is climb in the canyons I love. :cry:

what about the road to the Hollywood Reservoir? If that is open - it is next to GP, offers a climb (I've never been there), and a nice view. Does anyone know?

I tried getting past the guards at both Travel Town and near the Ranger Station. This was at about 7:00 this morning and they WOULD NOT LET ME THRU!!! The city has been bringing in some heavy machinery loaded up on semis everyday and there is alot of work going on up in the canyons at this time. I have written off GP for a while.

Well, Joel and I are still going to ride over there and see how far we get, but I now am just bummed. I realize that the big picture does not include my desire to ride over there, but still I can't help but cry about it.

I want Griffith Park back. :cry: :cry: :cry: (see what Joel has to deal with tonight? :p Anyone else want to join? It will still be a good ride as we will do hill repeats on some hill that we find...any hill).

By the way, thank you, gentlemen, for giving me the heads up about GP. I really appreciate that and have just been so consumed with my own pity over not being able to do our normal ride, that I forget to thank you! :o

Since GP is closed I finally decided to go up Chantry Flats tonight to see what it's like. I left my place around 7:30 and hit the gate close to 8. There was a few more cars than I thought I'd run into, and there actually was a cyclist other than me at the picnic area, but the descent wasn't that bad and actually felt like the bobsled ride at Disneyland towards the end.

Most of the roads were closed and guarded when we got up there last night (m.e., Mike -"ti-tillIdie" and myself).

So, one of my favorite things is making up new routes. We basically rode down into Los Feliz and went up every hill we could find between GP and Commonwealth. Lots of good climbs, short but getting up to 20% grades in places.

It was crazy how close the burn zone got to some of those homes up there. m.e. took some pics (natch) so hopefully she can post them here. On some of those roads, it really looked like the fire got stopped just short of people's backyards.

Actually a fun route - I was looking for some short hill intervals and got it along with seeing a bunch of new scenery.

And I gave the route a new name: "Dr. Feliz Good"

Joel summed it up :( I think GP is going to be out for awhile. Although, I liked Joel dragging us up those steep hills. :rolleyes: :p

Well, now Herb I don't know and I'm sorry I didn't PM you back yesterday, but I wanted to check the park out before I make a plan. Perhaps Chantry Flats? I've never climbed up that or Rose Bowl type ride? I'm just so bummed about Griffth Park. :(

Well and the thing that gets my goat is that they'll let a shuttle full of people up "some" road to the Observatory, but cyclists can't ride up there. Makes no sense. If the hillside comes down, they'd have a busload of people buried and not just a few stray cyclists. IMO, they've been wanting cyclists off the closed roads for awhile, and now they can keep us out. I wish I could complaint to the city as I feel that we should be allowed on the same road the shuttle is allowed on. :mad:
