"Responding to sophistry cannot be easy, precisely because sophistry aims to twist language so that it cannot be untwisted. Sophistry encourages its victims to meet it always on in its terms. They are seduced into competing for mere rhetorical victory, conceived as coercive persuasion. It is possible to gain victory over sophistry while succumbing to sophistry. Indeed, it is only too likely that one wins the war of coercion by a slightly cleverer sophistry."

My fault for calling it the Scotch. Dunno why I said that; maybe because I've been drinking Scotch tonight.
'Tis the center-counter opening/Scandinavian.
Anyway, ya...lousy opening for black for exactly that reason.
You could always play it as a counter-gambit, Grandmaster Alekhine.

well. gasoline might very well soon be 7 dollars a gallon. I predict before the year 2012. How is that for a reason.

Oh, sure. I still think it's an inferior opening. You're not going to see Fritz 10 make the move (2)...Qxd5, nor even attempt (1)...d5. I admit that David Bronstein would have surely flayed me alive with it. Actually, so would a lot of people, but then I'm not that good. My knowledge of opening theory is fairly well limited to Ruben Fine and the like.
EDIT: I see you're a chess journalist. That's wonderful. I would love to read some of your articles. Anything online?
Thanks for all the replies and helpful information. One of the reasons that I started riding my bike was because of high gas prices and my financial situation. Also becuase I wanted to be in better cardiovascular shape.
Some of you picked up on me biking to and from my farm job during the summer. Some of my concerns about that are. Being tired after working a 14 hour day, I start work at 7am and don't get done usually till about 10pm. I am worried that some nights I won't have the gusto left in me to bike the ten miles home. Also hauling my work clothes, I obviously don't want to bike home or to work in boots, car hart jeans and long sleeves and sweatshirt. Should I get a bag big enough to carry all of this, panniers perhaps?
My last and final one is getting rained on, I work driving farm equipment all day long so I am not outside my machine unless there is a problem to fix. It would be hard to tell the weather so early in the morning so I was wondering if anyone knew a solution for taking rain gear along with all of my work clothes. Perhaps just carry it all the time?
Thanks for all the replies :)

Bravo! :)
This is really excellent work Neil. I'm very impressed. When I get done with work today, I'll be digging into this a little deeper, but I couldn't resist taking a few minutes from the grind and going through the Whitaker trap analyses mentally. The only "trap" I ever use in the Ruy Lopez (usually only in blitz games) is Mortimer's trap, but it's always good to increase the arsenal. Thanks a lot for posting all of this! Looks like the movie's off for the evening. I'm going to dig into some chess instead.

I put up a new thread where hopefully it's on topic.
