I'm going to build this rack this weekend (http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/bikerack/makerack.htm) and I have a question. Do you think that I should make the tire slots smaller since it will be three road bike tires or will leaving it as the directions show work just as easily? This is just going to sit on my patio so we can better organize the pile of bikes we currently have.

The only way to make the slots narrow enough for road bike tires to fit tight would be to shorten the couplers. I built that rack for the back of my pickup and it holds mountain bikes great. The road bikes shift side to side some, but nothing a bungee cord can't solve.

cm- If I didn't have it in a truck but it just sat on the patio do you think it would hold those guys upright fine? We own a couple mnt bikes too so it would be nice to be able to put them in the slots as well but the road bikes have priority seating.

Yes they will just lean a little bit. If I was you I would fill it up with sand to help weigh it down before you glue the last end on. I like it otherwise, It is easy to throw in or out of either of my trucks. Last month I went camping at Palo Duro Canyon, and having the rack to park the bikes at was much better than trying to find something to lean them against.

Maybe if I wrapped duct tape or something around the ones I want to put a roadbike in? How bad is the lean? will it look junky?

How much length about is needed in the truck bed to fit a road bike, buddy of mine has a toolbox in his truck bed?

Or you could just buy one of these like i did a few weeks back, and spend your weekend doing something more relaxing and useful.

To save $28 off that ebay special, I'd rather make it myself

I like the pvc rack idea for multiple bikes. But here's a single rack I built out of wood for my road bike. I park my bike in it every day, and it works great for holding your bike up for light maintenance, bike washing/waxing, chain cleaning, etc.
