Mountain Biking - What is a Mountain Bike?

Im sorry...out of amusement on how hateful and unruly the "what is XC" thread got, I thought I would start another thread with a simple question and just...ya know...see where it goes?

I always prefered the term "all terrain bike" or "atb". That way all those people that don't live near mountains:rolleyes: don't feel so bad.

This is a mountain bike. Don't let those downhill/freeride types try to tell you anything different. By todays standards this would be a xc bike.

Anything gold, silver, or with the name Kona on it is a mountain bike. Thread closed. Mystery solved.

FYI- I was considering a Kona Jake for purchasing a few months ago. Decided against cyclo and went with a road bike off the Giant line.

When I was a kid in the early 80s in central Illinois my friends and I saw mountain bikes for the first time...and having some vague notion that they were sort of a cross between BMX and road bikes for adults, we called them "10-speed dirt bikes".

there should really be a policy in place that makes it so threads without any helpful value are automatically deleted. After 5 years you will be able to find this thread and read it and not gain anything from it, as it will just be wasting server space.

In that light i'll add a (my) brief definition of a mountain bike.

cheaper and healthier than smoking, alcohol, and casual sex. not nearly as fun, but a good replacement vice.

I think its a bicycle that is made of metal that they extracted from the mountain.

Definitions vary. This might have been considered one once. Now it's more of a cushy cruiser about town.
