I'm trying to convert my old GT Tequesta to singlespeed but all the spacer kits I have found are for 8/9 speed bikes. Does anyone know of a spacer kit for a 7 speed freewheel, or another way how I can get round it. I know I could just leave the cassette on but I want a clean look.

Thanks

A 7spd freewheel, or a freehub?

If it's a freewheel, then singlespeed freewheels are very common. And you won't need any spacers. All you may want to consider is a chain tensioner, unless your frame already has SS slots in the rear.

Sorry, I think I mean freehub. It's a 7speed Shimano STX setup anyway. As you can tell I'm not too good with 'technical' stuff!

Remove a spacer or two...

1" PVC pipe coupler cut into two pieces the correct lengths for your chainline is a most economical spacer set.

I too have a 7 speed and plan to make it into a single speed. I just took apart two cassettes and then had lots of spacers to work with. I figure I will just keep the gear I like. However, I was also kind of wondering if the tensioners are for 8/9 speeds with chain width and all-- or does that even matter?

Old derailleurs make adequate tensioners. Use a short chunk of old brake cable end between the cable stop and the pinch to set it for the right position.
