Bicycle Mechanics - New Seatpost

Hello, I want to put a carbon seat post on my bike. What is the best way to measure the existing seat post sothat I get the correct size replacement? I have a Montague Paratrooper and I am weeding out the lower end parts to make in into my commuter.

Another question I have is that with a carbon seat post I have heard that you can over tighten the seat clamp. How I do know when the clamp is tight enough without damaging the post itself?

The easiest way to determine the seat post size is to pull the old one out, wipe off the grease and read the size stamped into it.

If the post is not stamped with the size, then use a dial caliper to measure the diameter.

BTW, replacing your seat post isn't likely to result in any significant improvement.

Pull teh old seat post out and look at the area near the min insertion point. Ther will be numbers stamped into the post, something like 22.2. this numberis the diamater of the post. Purchase one with the same diamater. As for over tightining, not to much of a worry. Just do not do the tight and a half turn more route.

FYI: carbon seatposts don't come in a wide variety of diameters. You may not find your size - 27.2 and 31.6 the most common. If you're less than 27.2 forget it.
