Must have been the head spin from the effort that made him see two white lines.

Happens to the best of them. Here's Friere getting a early-celebrating Cipo back in March at the Tirreno-Adratico

the sprint was already over when he started celebrating though
he wouldnt have won even if he pushed it all the way to the line

Here's a quote from the linked cyclingnews article:

Kirchen looked to have it won but sat up a good 10m before the line, putting his arms in the air only to see Casar come round him on his right to take the stage win.

"He isn't celebrating... hes expressing his disapointment! (look at the facial expression"

actually if you read the article, they clearly state that he was the victim of premature celebration

10m... but Casar didn't just suddenly come up from behind and go around him within that 10m. He was already there and had a run on him. If Casar kept fighting all he could have done by that point would be to lunge to the line (you cant just make up a gap in 10m) and he still wouldn't have had it

Whether Kirchen would have won if he had sprinted it out isn't really important here. What is important is that he got beat with his hands up and looks like a total idiot (deservedly so).

Casar had been out in front about half the stage together with just one other rider. 1km before the finish Kirchen jumped from the massed peloton that chased the two leaders and passed them 300 meters before the line. Obviously he looked like a fool but on the other hand it is quite understandable that he did not believe that Casar would have the strength to get back on his wheel.

I saw the stage live on the telly and was as surprised as Kirchen that Casar had that much power left.

Just my 2 cents,
Timo
