Foo - Any tips for buying a mattress?

Feels like I'm trying to buy a car, every salesman at every store acts like its super deal.

From what I've read online, seems like asking for about 40% off is about right, so for a mattress listed for $1000, you should walk out the door with it for about 600...

I found one I like, made by Kingsdown for $1299.99, would it be reasonable to get the price down to the 800 dollar range?

Try before you buy. Bring your wife/girlfriends etc. Do it right there in the showroom. Use your restraints etc. You want it to be a realistic trial-run. Give it a real thrashing ... :D .

One of the salesmen I talked to today was pretty funny. There's a prom dress store next to his store and, I don't know how the subject came up, but he mentioned that he loves this time of year because all the young girls come to try on dresses for their proms, and he sees them running back to their car half naked sometimes. Of course, the only thing I could think of to say was,"Well, you got plenty of beds here to make use of." And he continued on how he gets called a pervert etc etc...

Sounds about right,the percentage. Having owned many matresses through properties and such,Sealys are the tuffest, Sertas are OK, not as costly,not as strong.The others S&F and Simmons are better for older people, more $$,more comfy from the get-go. Sealys are better for younger more vital individuals who ... well you know. The point IS that the names even in the one brand vary. Macy's will have the Royal Prince, a smaller place as found in NJ for example,will call it the Viscount or the Duke.I also sold matresses in a store in NY. I have have both angles covered,in sales and use. DON'T by FOAM !!!

What ever mattress you decide to buy, make sure you negotiate the lowest price. The sales rep shoud say, “We’ll beat any advertised price, or your mattress is FREEEE!”

I have a serta and I dig it... even though I only get to sleep in the damned thing two nights a week. It sounds odd but check the overstock stores like big lots and stuff like that. They're furniture is usually bottom of the barrel but you can find some good deals on any of the mattresses you would find in a high end furniture store.

Serta IS a fine product, especially the better ones, My preference for guest rooms,never uncomfortable

if you find a salesperson that will talk about different firmness and how you sleep, I'd buy from him. I sleep mostly on my side, so semi-firm was good for me. A pillow top would be too much padding and my back would hate me. I had a site somewhere...

Stay away from pillowtops, I'm stuck with one and not all that fond of it.

And stay away from Speepy's, their warranty is worthless. They won't replace our drfective matress under warantee without us spending money to upgrade to another mattress.

If you search the internet, it seems like a lot of people have a lot of complaints about a lot of different manufacturers, at this point, it's like WTF, every review says don't buy from this company/store, are there any good mattresses out there that I can have it delivered on short notice?

And yeah, I probably will stay away from Sleepys, not because of their warranty (I don't think anyplace honors it, or does what ever it can to get out of honoring it) but its seems like a disproportionate amount of complaints have come from Sleepy's customers concerning the mattress's quality and just not getting the right one.

I just bought a new mattress and box spring in January. The most important part of the process to me was trying them out, and I don't mean lying down for a couple minutes. I brought my own pillow and tried each one that looked good for around ten minutes. Then I narrowed the selection down and tried them again. A Kingsdown made it to the final three, but I ended up with a Simmons Cunningham which was the most comfortable of the bunch and considerably less than I was willing to spend-- bonus!

Here's an option: The "Sleep Number" bed. Got one a couple of years ago and love it. I can adjust it to suit my needs daily if I choose/need. Typically, I just leave it set on my number and it's great. Sometimes I think I need a firmer mattress and boost it up a bit or vice versa.

They come with a 20 year warranty and you can try it at home for 30 days risk free.

My mom has had one for about 10 years now and they really do hold up.

Unlike spring beds, it has no moving parts to wear out. As soon as you start to use a spring mattress it wears out via compression of the springs. A Tempurpedic is about $2200 and a high quality spring mattress is $1200-$1500. The Tempurpedic is the best deal since it will last more than twice as long AND is much more comfortable. I've actually bought two.

I loves my softside water bed. Just replaced our old one last week. After 25 years, the top cover was divoted so bad we needed a trapeze to get out of bed.

My brother got a sleep number bed. Tried that for a while. Then decided to try the Tempurpedic. After the 30 day period, he returned it and went back to the sleep number bed.

Everyone's different and in the end, it comes down to what works best for the individual! Take all this info for what it's worth and go do some bed hopping!

Don’t be afraid to drop some coin. You will probably have the mattress longer than any car, TV or gadget you’ll ever own. Assuming that you’re treating yourself well, you’ll be spending 7+ hours a day on the thing while you own it. If you divide all that out, your per unit of time cost is pretty cheap.

I bought a Simmons Beautyrest World Class Azure 2 years ago, upgraded to 800 thread count sheets, and every night when I get into bed I’m amazed at how great it feels. I’m so used to my good setup that when I stayed at a newer Marriott last week, I felt like I was sleeping on a bag of charcoal briquettes.

Used to work at a mattress/bedding/futon store. Lay on the mattresses in your price range and feel which is most comfortable, regardless of price. Buy that one. Most if not all mattresses will compress over time, even the high density foam. Spending more money won't get you a better mattress, usually. The knock-off brands are about the same as the high price "name brands" which are expensive due to huge advertising campaigns.
