Northeast - Henry Hudson Bridge closed June 2007 for 3 yrs

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Crossed the HHB today and saw a sign saying it will be closed for 3 years starting june 07. The sign implied there might be access to the upper deck from the bronx side, but no through traffic.
If you have time this weekend the HHB is worth the effort, it may be the last chance you get. Follow west side bike path to dykeman st. Make a left. You will see a sign that says bike lane ends and another that says Hudson river with a picture of a bike. The second sign tells the truth. Go until you see an over pass to cross the train tracks. Make a left and keep going to you are on the bridge.

I'm wondering if the 5BBC ride this weekend is going over the HHB. I hope so!
Thanks for the heads up.

According to the message I just received a few minutes ago the Henry Hudson Bridge is one of the 26 bridges they'll be crossing on Saturday's ride.
Hi,
Thanks for your inquiry.
Correction: It's Bridges of New York, NOT Bridges of
Madison Ave.
I created and started this ride in 2003. It is like
not other bike club ride in this here city, esp. urban
cycling. We will go on, go under, go over bridges in
all five boroughs.
Here's the complete list of 26 crossings. subject to
change:
Brooklyn Bridge
Union St. Bridge
9th St. Bridge
Carroll Ave. Bridge
3rd St. Bridge
Manhattan Bridge
Williamsburgh Bridge
Pulaski Bridge
Roosevelt Island Bridge
Queensborough Bridge
63rd St. Pedestrian Bridge
Ward's Island Pedestrian Bridge
Unknown Ward's Island Pedestrian Bridge
Triborough Bridge
Willis Ave. Bridge
Third Ave. Bridge
Madison Ave. Bridge
145th St. Bridge
Macomb Dam Bridge
Inwood Park pedestrian Bridge
Henry Hudson Bridge
Broadway Bridge
University Ave. Bridge
Washington Bridge
George Washington Bridge
Bayonne Bridge
Note: this will be an opportunity to ride the Henry
Hudson Bridge, before it's bike/ped path and bridge is
closed for the next three years, starting in June.
We'll see these bridges, but not ride on them:
High Bridge
Hamilton Bridge
Hell Gate Bridge
Chamber Street pedestrian bridge
Verazzano Bridge
First off, it should take all day. Fini is between
4-6pm. This ain't an easy "quickie."
It's early because we avoid crowds on the bridges,
esp. the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. And the West
Side Greenway & elsewhere will be swarming with people
for the annual Navy Fleet Week festivities.
It'll take time because we have to ride carefully on
city streets. And some bridges have climbs, making
them somewhat hilly.
There will some parts that require walking.
Speed is the least of your worries. We may go 12-15
mph. Going safely over those bridges, by hook or crook
is the main thing. And have some fun and achievement.
Note: I will ride a sturdy roughed touring road bike
with bike bag, built for toughness, not speed.
Bring sunscreen to avoid sunburn.
Yes, lunch is at the 45 mile mark, but will take very
short food/rest stops along the route. Again, the
focus is riding those bridges. Please bring food, like
a sandwich. Lunch will be at Hoboken's Sinatra Park
Cafe. At this point we have one more bridge to cross:
the Bayonne Bridge. People are encouraged NOT to eat
too much.
There will be no cuesheets. You just follow me. The
route is in my head. Bring a New York City cycling
map, available at bike shops, free, to get an idea.
Not sure how many people show up--it's a 6am start,
6:23am departure. Those who make the effort to get up
early will appreciate the ride, when completed. That's
when the "wow" factor will be realized. Maybe five to
ten people will show. The most I had was 20-23 folks.
Sounds tough, but it's not, if you stay with me on
route.
Okay, that's it.
Hope this helps,
Alfredo
Holy cow - 26 crossings?! Hmmm....

I'm on the fence about this ride. I need to get to obligations earlier than the finish time. Maybe I'll do a section of it and get myself home when I need to.
Anyone going?

I'm going to do as much of the bridges ride as I have time for. Hopefully the route passes through my 'hood later than earlier.
If anyone else is going, I'll be the guy on the not-quite-vintage purple Rockhopper. See at 6am!
Peace. Have a great Memorial Day weekend all.

3 yrs? So not till 2010? Is this still the case? Has anyone ridden over this bridge before it closed-- It looks like it would provide a real nice view.
(and it would be ideal from my commute from Riverdale. The Broadway bridge is traffic nightmare)

I don't see any reason why that would change. If anything, it could take longer if funding gets cut.
I guess you could call 311, see if they have more info.

Here's a photo I did in the late 80s from the upper level when the Amtrak bridge was being restored. The last time I rode the Henry Hudson Bridge was back in 2007 and, at the time, only the lower level was open to bikes. The lower level also had lots of chain link fencing that doesn't make for good photos.

Bridge looks like a work in progress. It will get done and effects the lower level where the bike path is.
If you use the Broadway Bridge just ride on the sidewalk and say scuse me.
The grates will eat up your tires.

The grates havent affected my gatorskins...
...but, the "law" is to walk the bike on the sidewalk. I prefer to ride my bike on the street.
