"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Riis to hold press conference Friday

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Gee....I wonder what he'll say? This should be worth a laugh or three.
Zabel admitted to using the banned blood boosting hormone EPO during the 1996 Tour de France, a race won by Riis who was also riding for Team Telekom. Riis, the director of Team CSC since 2001, must now respond to the confessions of his former colleagues and doctors, all of whom refused to speak about any other riders' activities.

I hope it's worth a few laughs. I'm buried in grading final exams. I need some humor in my life right now. Actually I did get a bit from looking at the answers to some of the problems. I had a question on there about the governing equation for oxygen transport in the human body. I asked a bunch of questions about how to use the principles we learned in class to predict shifts in equilibrium from changes in elevation, hemoglobin concentration, etc. I even
asked about blood doping and how to show chemically (wrt/ the equation) why athletes do it. One person said (this is an exact quote), "Blood doping makes you feel a lot of POWER, like you could pick
up the biggest rock!"
I almost spilled my caffeinated beverage all over the keyboard. :D
oh help...I know I shouldn't be laughing.

And what purpose would that serve 11 years after the fact?

Yeah, you should. As someone once pointed out: "Really, it's only a bike race in the end".

Riis will say "I doped but I only doped to pose for that one picture where I look like I'm on my death bed...err bike".
Everybody shares the blame in this thing - directors that pressure riders, riders that give in, Tour organizers that design brutally long and hard stages (the Giro guy is known for this), magazine writers that whine about courses being too easy...even the popcorn guy is part of the problem. :)
Can't wait to hear the story... "Sure I tried, and I used it to win the TdF, and everyone around me was doing it, but as soon as I quit racing and became a DS I dedicated my life to making the sport clean as evidenced by my riders' sterling non-doping record at CSC...
".... oh *****. Nevermind."

Well for one thing maybe the riders won't be the only ones punished for this culture of doping. The DS's should bare as much responsibility and take their share of the punishment. The idea that Riis had no idea that Basso doped is ludicrous. I can just hear the conversation:
"Ivan, if you want to beat Lance, if you want to win the big prize you must do this. I can't do it for you of course, but I can show how and tell you who to see....."
These guys who run the team either know directly what the riders are doing or turn a blind eye while encouraging them to dope. In either case they should be punished along with the riders.

Heard on race radio today that there most likely won't be any punishment laid on Zabel...several years after the fact, yadda yadda yadda. If Riis admits that he doped in '96...does the same policy apply? Where do they draw the line?

I believe that there a statute of limitations of 8 years under the WADA code so whatever happened in 96 is irrelevant for punishment.
The only reason to admit such old doping is PR. Somebody will always be dissatisfied and you can't please them all- why try.

His statement:
"Concerning the current debate in Germany, Bjarne Riis would like to give the following statement:
After the long run of confessions concerning the Telekom team in the 1990s, I have decided to give a statement about my involvement.
I have decided this for two reasons.
First of all, I'm doing this to keep the focus on the work we are doing today that keeps cycling in the right perspective. The massive steps we have taken to fight doping and the ways in which we have secured that the team rests on the right and proper foundations.
I think if we are to talk about doping, we should talk about what to do now and not about the mistakes in the past. The recent developments in Germany have taken the balance out of this and therefore I want to set the record straight. And I want to do this, because the future of cycling needs the right focus.
Second of all, I'm doing this to get rid of the endless discussions about things that are truly in the past and that I personally have put behind a long time ago. I don't want my personal past to overshadow that work and brilliant effort that Team CSC is doing today. We are the number one team in the world for the second year running and I want my riders and sponsors to be proud of that. They work, within the rules, with passion, professionalism and commitment and I want them to keep on doing that. When I was a rider in the 1990s, I worked extremely hard to get my results. I worked extremely hard, day in day out and I sacrificed a lot just even to be part of the best. In that time, the perspective on doping and preparation was wrong and misguided.
That also means that I did things that I shouldn't have and I have regretted that ever since. Those were mistakes that I take the full responsibility for and I don't have anyone to blame but myself. We all make mistakes and I think my biggest mistake was to let my ambition get the better of me. That I have had to deal with a long time ago and I am glad to say that I am a lot wiser now. Both in my personal and in my professional life.
I don't want the mistakes of my personal past to stand in the way of the work we are doing today. I did what it took to compete at the highest level back then, and it's a deep satisfaction for me that those days are long gone and the sport has moved in the right direction. If that wasn't the case, I wouldn't be here today.
I have learned from my past – for better and for worse. The experience and wisdom I have gained informed my decision to come back to cycling and has energized me to create the best team in the world."
