I've always been a Cytomax drinker (only because a couple of times, when I drank Gatorade, it just made me sick). So I was just curious which energy drink do you normally use?

I have had the same experience with Gatorade messing my stomach up. But I do use it while backpacking. I usually water it down a bit and mix it lower than recomended. Glutton for pain.

Cytomax Grape flavor on all rides; and Hammer Perpetuem on longer rides. Honestly, I can't really tell any difference performance-wise amongst the drinks that I've tried except for the tastes. :p

I got the Perpetuem for my first century. Since I'm lactose intolerant, I find it ok as long as I only drink it near the final hour or two of the century.

I think you should replace Perpetuem with Heed on the poll. Peretuem is more a complex carb, soy protein, food replacement than just a electrolyte drink. I use Heed and I have had no problems with it at all. I used to use Cytomax but I found it too sweet and I would come down too hard after drinking it. I found with Cytomax I would have to drink it throughout the ride to sustain. If I ran out I would be screwed. Heed doesn't do that. It is not very sweet at all and it has more electrolytes than other drinks. Oh I used Accelerade before and found it unbearable on my stomach. The protein they use just killed me. Hammer products use only natural healthy ingredients. I also use Sustained Energy, it rocks!

I like one scoop of Cytomax and one scoop of protein powder. Usually the flavors are like Citrus + Chocolate. If an organized ride, I just use whatever they have, normally lemon-lime Gatorade.

I have used Efuel alot and I like it too. I am sponsored now by Endurox and Accelerade and I really like that stuff. It has protein which is really important when doing Ultras.

I use diluted gatorade. You can get it anywhere and I'm not after too much liquid carb. If it makes you burp then your body is turning the excess carbo into gas and expelling it instead of using it.

I use elete (http://www.eletewater.com/)drops for electrolytes. For fuel, I usually have no problems with solid foods (cliff, powerbar, figs) and gels. But my recent experience with long, climbing rides (MC, BA), illustrated that it is very difficult to find the time to eat enough... so I've started to use hammer perpeteum when the situation calls for the convenience liquid fuel.

It seems like they changed it in the last couple of years. Not quite the same as it used to be. Hence the reason why I'm looking at what others are using.

Glaceau Energy & Power, usually dilute a bit w/water. Power Bar gel Latte. It tastes the least like Butt from the other gels I've had. Kinda sticky though. I'm just messy when I'm riding I guess.

I use Revenge Pro.
Does not upset my stomach, as both gatorade and Clif Shot do.
Use the PowerBar Gel latte for extra energy on the ride ( need the caffiene..).
I do change the gels with other brands just so I don't get too sick of one type..

+1 Mandarin Orange Heed, not sweet at all.

I use Gatorade powder. Big can from Smart & Final for $9. Does not upset my wallet like Cytomax and a few of the others. I just mix it to my preference!:D

Smartwater
+1

I drink SMARTwater the day before long rides and HEED during the ride.

A couple of times on long (70+ miles), I mixed my first two bottles of HEED with SMARTwater. That worked so well for me, it was like cheating. I did that on the 2nd Santa Barbara ride and I really never cared about the heat.

Use Hammer Heed for shorter ride and Perpetuem for longer & harder ride. They are not too sweet and appear to work very well.

I'm trying out Heed today. What freaks me out is it is colorless. I got Mandarin Orange, and expecting it to be orange. Maybe I'll put food coloring in to satisfy me psychologically .... :D

I haven't really noticed much of a difference other than taste, between most of the ones I've tried on shorter rides (<5hrs).

Anything less than 4 or 5 hours I usually just use whatever's available, and bring along a few gels.

Right now, on my kitchen counter, I have a canister of Orange/Mango Carb Boom!, Lemon Lime Gatorade Endurance, and Sun Tea Powerbar endurance. They all seem to work equally well. I like the flavor of the Powerbar endurance and the carb boom the best. The gatorade is a little too sweet.

I used Perpetuem for KTR, and it seemed to work pretty well. I had one bottle of gatorade endurance, but found it to be too sweet (Yeah, it's a *fantastic* idea to try out a new drink on a 15+ hour endurance race.). After it was gone I didn't mix up any more of it, and just used Perpetuem and water. Think I might've had a gel or two as well, and a bit of solid food (PB & J around dawn.), along with a few endurolytes.

I've got another off-road 100 miler coming up in July, and am planning on fine-tuning my fueling game plan on the longer training rides between now and then...

Any of you endurance gurus (I'm figuring something in the neighborhood of 12 - 14 hours to finish the Cream Puff, if last year's singlespeed times are a good indication.), that have nutritional tips for longer events, feel free to chime in w/ suggestions.

George...you dont find Accelerade a bit gritty? That was my big issue with it...but hey...free is free!!
What do you use if anything pre-ride?

Not George, but have used Accelerade a lot this year (it is what's being served at RnR Marathon, so I was training with it). I find Accelerade seems to take long time to dissolve. If I mix it and drink it right away, it invariably tastes gritty and often have residual chunks in the bottom of the bottle. However this seems to go away if you mix it and let it sit for a couple of hours.

I go for whatever I can get for free when events are finished. Other then that a dash of something like Koolaide in the water can make it a lot more palatable.

I was very pleased with Perpetuem on today's heartbreak ride. Goes down very smooth... a very convenient method of getting those calories in. Also tried hammer's sustained energy, which they had at all the checkpoints. I think I preferred perpetuem, but pretty similar taste and consistency.

Basically it looks like the Perpetuem is slightly flavored, and has a bit of fat in addition to carbs & protein.

What is the difference Between Perpetuem and Sustained Energy?
Choosing between Sustained Energy and Perpetuem is really based on your personal preference.

Sustained Energy - This is our time-tested standard fuel for extended exercise. As explained in other articles in this handbook, any exercise beyond about two hours requires a protein component in the fuel. Sustained Energy contains about 87% carbohydrates (almost all from maltodextrin and glucose polymers-no added simple sugars, of course), and about 13 % isolated soy protein (7:1 ratio), the ideal combination to use when rate of exercise is between 70-85% MHR in "sustained" efforts lasting anywhere from 3-12 hours.

Perpetuem - This newer product takes the concept of long-distance fueling to the max. We designed it primarily for extreme endurance events lasting about six hours to many days. Perpetuem contains 75% carbohydrates (from long-chain maltodextrins-no added simple sugars), 13% fatty acids from a specially made long-chain lyso-lecithin, and nearly 10% soy protein. A small portion of fat seems to cue your body to more liberally release its fatty acids stores, which account for up to 70% of one's energy requirements in long bouts of exercise. A little fat in the fuel also slightly slows the rate of digestion and thus promotes "caloric satisfaction," another attractive plus during primarily aerobic ultra-long distance events. Perpetuem provides maximal benefits at an aerobic pace (under 70% MHR).

Sustained Energy is a neutrally flavored powder. Perpetuem has an orange-vanilla "Dreamsicle" flavor.

Perpetuem contains lyso-lecithin fat, whereas Sustained Energy does not.

Perpetuem contains tribasic sodium phosphate, which is a tremendous lactic acid buffer. Sustained Energy does not contain this nutrient.

Both fuels contain l-carnosine (an antioxidant that also buffers lactic acid) l-carnitine (to promote fatty acid utilization), and chromium polynicotinate (to stabilize blood sugar level).

Perpetuem contains the new "XT" soy protein preparation, which, along with the sodium in tribasic sodium phosphate, provides a more complete mineral profile. The mineral content in a two-scoop serving of Perpetuem may allow you decrease your Endurolytes intake by one capsule per hour. Also, the "XT" soy protein contains higher isoflavone content, believed to have superb cardiovascular health benefits. Sustained Energy has soy protein and an excellent isoflavone content, but the strain used in Perpetuem has even more.
