View Full Version : Am I now a bike commuter?

I took a 25 mile ride today from Kimberton to my bike shop in Trappe, and then to my gym for some lifting. I had food thrown at me once, and comments of some kind shouted at me twice by passing motorists. Oh, and some honking as well. I'm sure all these wonderful drivers order t-shirts from CafePress.

Have I met the requirements for the title of "bike commuter", or is there more unpleasantness I need to endure?

You sound like one to me.

You have now been baptised.

Oh, and someone at my gym compared me to the protagonist of the film "The 40 year old virgin." That seals it, I think.

Sounds like you found all the jerks in PA all at the same time.

Keep on bicycling. The benefits will greet you.

You are a true bike commuter when you proudly compare yourself to him.

You got my vote! I have been commuting to work for about a month now and I have not had to suffer the amount of unpleasantness as you did on one trip.

Do you ride clipless? If so, you should have fallen over slowly to cap off the day.

Otherwise, it sounds as if you are now officially recognisable as a 'bicycle commuter'.

I've gotten that. Along with "Safety First". Some guys at work call me "Rocket Man" because of my blinkys on my messenger bag.

To my thinking, that makes you more of a transportation cyclist than a bicycle commuter, because I think of "commuting" as traveling to/from work (or school?) mainly.

Knowing how to cycle for transportation and knowing how to bike-commute are the same thing, though.

Definitely a commuter:D

IDEA!!!!

Take all the morons who honk at you, curse at you etc. etc. and confiscate their cars for a month and force them to ride bicycles every day.

Bet they would change their attitudes PDQ;)

You're now a bike commuter. Keep doing it and you can stay in the club.

Point taken. I don't commute for work yet, as I work second shift and my job is 15 hilly miles from my house. Once I get more experienced riding (my life-experience on a bike is five months), I'll try to bike-commute.

True. I almost forgot my shoes before riding to church today, does that count?

Only when on a fix, then tuck everything in :)
