Bicycle Mechanics - Rusting chain

My chain is rusting already ........... only after a few weeks that I got my bike ........

My bike got caught in a drizzle once, but I did try to wipe off the any excess water on the bike. What is going on, is it normal for the chain to rust and should I get a new chain? Also, does using the degreaser cause rusting? I did wipe off the degreaser, though there was some left in the unreachable areas of the chain which I couldn't remove completely.

Sounds like you need to get some lubrication on it. Finish Line makes good stuff, 2 different types - one for dry conditions and one for wet. Sounds like you live in a damp, humid environment. Try keeping your bike indoors when your not riding it.

Rain and water based degreaser will both leave a fine patina of rust on the chain. You could use a water displacer like WD 40 after such exposure and lube later. Isopropyl alcohol also displaces or mixes with water and evaporates a bit faster. Chains don't take to lube very well when wet. Depending on time of yr, chain cleaning can inevitably result in rust as it can take 6-12hrs for all the water to dry off in winter. It has to dry out under the rollers as well. The rust is going to be superficial and it will disappear after a few miles of riding and is of no concern. Steve

just remember, after flushing out almost all your original lubricant with wd40, relube your chain with a good chain lubricant.
