What a waste! A bike's no good hanging from the ceiling. You gotta do it justice by riding the hell out of it.

What a waste! Exactly what I was about to post. Except without the exclamation point, because I'm just not that enthusiastic.

that's what proteus in college park, md. does.

of course it doesn't hurt that they used to have koichi yamaguchi as their in-house builder.

Grouchy bike shop owners hate fixie kids...that's at least been my experience.

what's wrong with the mt airy dude?

he has all these amazing old frames hanging from the ceiling that he'll only sell if he's feeling in the mood to sell. there was a red raleigh track frame that I wanted to buy, so I asked him, how much? he gave a price, I came back a week later with the money and he says, "I don't want to sell it today."

before someone says, "you probably smell bad," or "mountain bikers do it in the dirt," he's like that with everyone, even my friend that worked there.

total tease

he did that to me too.. except i had made a 3+ hour trip down there..
and then he actually got mad when i told him i couldn't afford anything at "wednesday price" (2x what he had quoted me on tuesday)

what a grouch. that basically translates into i dont want to sell this to YOU:( . but i guess someone needs to keep a pristine stash so there will be some cherry vintage track bikes left in a few years once the fixie craze dies down.

I guess it's up to the owner if he wants to hang onto or sell his pristine stuff. FWIW, I was into paintball for awhile and am hanging onto a pristine minicocker with very low serial number until I find the right buyer. Not in a hurry. Doesn't make me evil.

you know if he sold those schwinn madisons there would be a very good chance they would have a nice bright deep v wheelset within a month. not that i give a **** about that, but that might shed some light into why he is saving them.

desire is the cause of all suffering

keep your desires simple - like cheeseburgers or tassles for your risers.

None of the people who used to work at the shop during that era are there anymore though... and the CP shop has been completely redone. I worked for Proteus in the early 1990s and dug through all the old tubesets/lugs/framebuilding books they had around -- that's how I ended up getting into 3Rensho, through trying to learn more about Yamaguchi. That shop was really interesting.

according
to my boss, and i understand where she is coming from, she thinks they are valuable, but donest want to go thru the hassle of trying to get what she wants for them, since we are in a small town (pop less than 20k ) people tend ot be willing to pay less for bikes. and she doesnt want to ship them. but then she wouldnt sell me a set of steel toe clips and has more than 12 cats, so i think there is a pack rat thing going on. i work at the only shop you cant dumpster dive because nothing gets tossed

Sounds like my old boss. They had boxes and boxes of old inventory- old rims, saddles, wheels out the wazoo, etc. They had no interest in getting rid of it- I asked if I could have some stuff, as it wasn't doing anything, they laughed at me and said they wouldn't even sell it for retail prices to one of their employees.
I didn't see any track stuff- just lots of old campy, lots of old road stuff, they even had a case of NOS turbos and concors.

I just found an old shop owner the other day that has all the good stuff and is willing to get rid of it for decent price. Top quality track frames is all sizes, Dura-Ace high flange, Old Campy, Suntour, any tubular rim you can imagine, and Dura-Ace track cranks(square taper) all priced to sell. I think he is willing to get rid of it because I am a good friend of a good friend but it's like I have hit a gold mine/parts museum. The funny thing is I tried to buy a tube of tubular glue off of him and he wouldn't sell it, he had a whole case of it but he wouldn't budge. As soon as I find some transportation, I don't have a car and it's a couple of hours away, I am going to go buy some stuff. He also had four pairs of Continental Olympics sitting under his workbench, thats approximately $2000 worth of tubular tire.

For some reason, he's the only person that works hard in life and no one but him deserves stuff?
