how many hours (on average) do you need in order to function at a relatively productive level the next day?

well since my gf and I started dating (1.5 yrs) I've pretty much slept w/ her every night. She goes to bed around 11 and wakes around 6:30 so I've been OVER rested. I'm much more of a up till 1, awake at 6 kinda person. We'll see what grad school does to me ;)

I need 6-8 but I get much less. New puppy wakes up around 1:30 & 4:30. If I can I try to get a 20 min. nap in the afternoon. I'm longing for the nights when I can sleep through, uninterrupted, and feel well-rested in the morning.
I used to think I needed 8 or 9, but my new job has shown me that I can function fairly productively on 6 or 7. I don't LIKE it, but I can do it. Slept 13 hours last night :D
I can function well and feel rested and alert on just under six hours per night. At least for a couple of weeks. I sometimes feel I need more sleep, but sleeping more would make it harder to go to sleep at the same time each following night. If I were to sleep eight hours every night, I'd be going to bed at around sunrise by the end of the first week...
I prefer to get 7-8 hours of sleep a night. I'd rather not, but I can go on 5-6 for a short period, or even 4 for a day or two.
Anything more than 9 or so, and I feel miserable the whole day.
need 8+, get around 6. much less and I get very grumpy.

6-8 historically and nowadays, though there was a time where I got along on about 2 per night for several months, and then for 4-5 hours a night for over a year, with a five-hour night being a good night.
Amazing how the human body can adapt to a given situation.... Not perfect, but functional.

I can do okay with six. Nowadays I sleep probably 9 or 10 hours a night.
Too much sleep makes me tired sometimes (sounds weird but it's true). I don't have much energy if I sleep for a long time...
Sometimes I split up my sleep. I have to work at 5:15 tomorrow morning, but I won't go to bed till 11:30 or 12, so I'll get around 4 hours maybe, then sleep for about 2 in the afternoon when I get off work at 1:45.

I can be reasonably functional on 7 or 8 or less on occassion, but I'm not really feeling at my peak unless I get about 9. However, I can almost never, regardless of how tired I am, sleep more than 10. One time I hit 13 after leading week long youth retreat, but that's a pretty rare exception.

In bed most nights by 3:30am, asleep by 4ish, and I wake up at 7:30. All I need is maybe an energy drink or a bike ride.

I've read that many people's sleep cycle is about 1.5 hours. So, multiples of that work well when trying to feel rested. Seems to be the case for me. 7.5 and I'm good. More than 7.5 but less than 9 and I am drowsy most of the day.
Overall, if I can wake up without an alarm, I'm at my best. Unfortunately, with work during the week, I need something waking me up in the AM.

7, less than that and I feel like ****. I can function on 5-6, but it screws me up.

I usually knock off between 4 & 5 and my son makes sure I'm up by 8. Once or twice a month I'll go to bed at 1 or 1:30, but afterward I always feel like I wasted part of my day.
My work schedule is so bizzare that I get sleep were I can . I usually pull 2 17-hour shifts and a 8. I work 40 hours in 2 1/2 days. Night shift, swingshift , dayshift....no set pattern. I`m often awake for 24 hours. Sometimes I sleep 3 hours and sometimes I crash for 12 hours. The best sleep I ever had was when a hurricane took our power for 2 weeks. I was asleep when the sun set and awake when the sun rose. That was the best. When I`m on vacation I sleep about 6 hours every night and I might take a nap if needed.

Thats more or less how it is for me. 7-8 is perfect for me, but I can function for several weeks on 4 to 5 hours a night.
I've made a discovery about me and sleep just now. I actually perform better in a day if I don't wake up to an alarm even if I get less hours of sleep if I get more hours of sleep waking up to an alarm, hm.
