Filled up the Tacoma, my daily driver, on May 4th. Thanks to Schwinn, Trek and Raleigh it's still at the top of the driveway with 3/4 tank of CHEAP GAS ($2.89/Gal). Next challenge, make it through June without gassing it up. Come on legs, don't fail me now !!!!!!!!!!!

We'll put the money we're saving towards fuel costs in late August when we deliver the twins and their "Stuff" (the wife's been training them on getting "Stuff" almost daily now) to their respective colleges. We'll squeeze it all into our '94 Conversion Van with it's 35 Gallon tank ($122 /tank @ $3.50/Gal). I've roughly calculated our total fuel cost for driving to both schools round trip at about 450 dollars. Still cheaper than Amtrak or Air Fare for three. Plus, once we become empty nesters our fuel bills will drop drastically. My brides Camry will just sit in the driveway awaiting it's one or two trips/week to run errands.
Quite a change from what it does now...the engine's seldom even allowed to cool down, or so it seems.
(The wife can't bike due to physical constraints....and we all know teens need to be driven or they melt or something)

Moral of the story, save gas money by sending the kids off to school....and ride the bike "it's free".

Great story. My wife and I started bike commuting and are saving a ton in gas, but as you noted, our teen will melt unless driven. I offer top pump the tires on her seldom-used bike, but riding is just too too too uncool.
Enjoy your empty nest. I know I'm looking forward to mine. (ok.. in a sad way)

Your bills will go down so much when the children leave ;for utilities, groceries and supplies as well, so much ,you have no idea.. NO idea. I'd tell ya but you'd call me a lier. I relocated to NC less than 11 months ago from NY, since I arrived, INCLUDING the trip down from NY in my 4sp, 4cyl. 2001 Camry has just received it's 240th something dollars worth of gas in it tuesday. When I commuted in NY/ NJ,that was 3 month's worth, not including ANY road trips. Road trips for the occassional weekend would add another $40. I feel what you're saying.

Ha! That's the best I've heard it described.

I ran into my niece and nephew in Seneca Park yesterday. First they were amazed to see me so far from home (I live by the MAG, all of maybe six miles away), then when I told them I had 55 miles in towards a 70-mile ride, they about fell over.

Hey CC. Great sig line. Back in '94 and '95 I rode with a team on the RAMS MS-150, and the team name...you guessed it "Old and in the Way". We had team polo shirts proudly displaying the team name and stating that we're back. Older, slower and still in the way. Thanks, you've brought back some fond memories (both of the 90's and the 70's).

Having had two daughters leave home in the past few years- I can assure you that most bills will go down- Except for the food bills. I now seem to have both my daughters- and their partners round for LOTS of meals- just come round to see you Dad-- but there are now 4 of them instead of just two.

I do get my own back though as When the Boys come round- I always seem to have some project going that needs a helping hand- so while they get started on it- I go for a bike ride- A Long bike ride to enable them to finish the job that I did not want to do.
