So on the NorCal Memorial Day weekend ride, Andy got a bottle of beer at the Pescadero Bakery. While it may have some carbo loading effects, I just cannot fathom taking a swig in the middle of a ride ... especially when we still have about 2000 feet of climbing left to do. So let's see how far this thread goes.
Beer in the middle of a ride ... good or bad idea? And please, provide supporting facts! :D

This is pretty normal for Andy. He rarely drinks, but on rides he like a brew mid way. All I know is after the beer I never saw him again until the top of Tunitas. Besides it wa an IPA, pure energy.:D Actually I have endulged in the past also. Is there a benefit? I dont know, but it sure works after a ride.:D

But here's the most important question: Was he posing while sipping his beer? :D

That would be an upchuck-fest for me. vomit-o-ramaville. I never could mix booze with excercise though, not even softball

I wasn't there to see him sipping it .. other people were talking about it. Sean can vouch for it.
BTW, for more on the ride, check out http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=302629
As long as it was not a full 22oz missile of hearty 9% brew then I could easily see myself joining Andy.

beer and softball are equal to horse and carriage.
beer and softball are equal to horse and carriage.
so the beer actually makes the softball game move!?! that is what I was missing all these years!

Umpire: Okay, let's go over the ground rules. You can't leave first until you chug a beer. Any man scoring has to chug a beer. you have to chug a beer at the top of all odd-numbered innings. Oh, and the fourth inning is the beer inning.
Wiggum: Hey, we know how to play softball!

While it's not a habit, it wouldn't be out of the question.
I used to ride with some older dudes, who would do long rides at an easy pace, and have beers with a leisurely lunch, halfway into a century.
There was a guy at KTR (and this is a 142 mi. mtn. bike race) who claimed to have had a beer near the end, and said he felt great on the 2nd to last climb. I didn't witness the beer, but he did spark a bowl at the bottom of the last, long road climb. He motored away after that, so it seemed to be workin' for him. ;) What blew my mind was not so much that he drank a beer, but that he *carried* it for 100+ miles.
I don't normally partake during rides, but I did have a beer at the top of the El Tigre when I rode Rosarito-Ensenada a few years ago. Some guy just handed it to me, who am I to turn down a free beer?

How did he avoid the inevitable bottle bomb of being shaken around on a MTB?

I rode in a fun college bike ride a little while back. In the intermediate semi-stops, ppl will line up (think of it as drive-thru) and the ride organizer will squeeze margarita (I think) from a bottle to ppl's mouth. It was pretty fun. :D
The ride was only 22 miles w/many real rest stops for fun and games.
Rosarita > Ensenada ride...
People we slamming beer and margies at the rest stops...
Wont be doing that ride again anytime soon!

We could do a ride that deliberately goes to every microbrewery possible? But who's going to be the designated rider?

Drinking a beer would KILL me, but I don't drink anymore, so I'm not used to it. But I never did like to mix alcohol and excercise.

Beer on a ride? Bad idea, it tends to turn calves into cows!!! Although a bad idea we do so at least once a week on one particular ride. A cool one just tastes so dam good! I don't recommend it though.

I think it all depends on the ride. It's pretty common for MTB'ers to have a beer at the top of their ride, but on the way up? I doubt I'd ever do that. A really fun route, by the way for MTB is to start at the bottom of Whiting, go up Mustard and out the back of the park and then up the Santiago Truck Trail to the Luge, stop at Cook's for a pitcher, and then bomb down Cactus. I think the beer actually helps for things like that. Aforementioned other vices were fun as well in my earlier years but I don't "partake" in the "safety meetings" these days all that much. :)

I can't imagine having a beer mid ride, but I typically dehydrate on rides, so the more fluid I can get in me the better - and of the nonalcoholic kind!

Apparently, beer helped Andy, cause he was charging up Tunitas like there was no tomorrow. I'm the same way ... can't have a beer in the middle of a ride. Gets me more exhausted quicker.

Do you guys ever get "beer mouth?" It's like I have a fuzz on the top of my mouth. Not all beers cause it, and, no, before you start teasing that I'm drinking too much, I get it sometimes after one beer! I can't imagine riding with beer mouth and dealing with snot rockets. Too much ick on one ride. :p
I remember back in collage---years and years ago---I drank one to many beers (or was that 5 or 6 to many?) and I went for a ride on the bike path. I kept falling into the ice plant and I couldn't figure out why. Whyyyyyyyyyy? So, what does this have to do with the theme of Beer on Rest Stops? Don't drink and ride.

Well, certainly drinking until inebriated is bad. I hold a hard line on that and don't condone drinking while riding or driving. But ONE beer at a rest stop isn't going to hurt anyone (unless they are ten years old - in which case they are too young to be drinking any way). :D

I think a light weight cyclist would probably blow at least a .08 on a breath test after one beer, assume the position. A few years ago my friend Diana and friend shared 3 beers at Newcombs Ranch on the way back from Pig Pines on a 9000ft ride. They didn't know there was 900 ft left back to Red Box. We left them there kinda sh#t faced never to be seen again that day. While I was preparing for my first century an old guy told me to pour a warm Becks over my oatmeal for a pre-ride breakfast. Only one problem, I don't like oatmeal. "Keep coming back":D
Well ... did you have your beer?
No, Bill did not bring any for us and we did not carry them for the 75 miles leading up to Heartbreak Hill...

No, Bill did not bring any for us and we did not carry them for the 75 miles leading up to Heartbreak Hill...I'm bringing a Camelbak next time. I'll carry puke flavored Sustained Energy in my bottles and beer in the pack bladder. With my hydration plan, I won't care if I get a jersey or not. The SAG guy can just dump me in the parking lot and I'll sleep in my truck until everyone comes back.

He owned that hill. John and I started out with him and he completely dusted us. We never even saw him after the first of the inclines began. More beer!!!

one would not hurt, with all the carbo loading. But, it does not hydrate, it even dehydrates a little? Better make up that loss with lots of water? My beer is after the ride.

My take:
1) The carbs won't take effect until tomorrow
2) Alcohol dehydrates you
3) I'm easy to intoxicate
So I wouldn't, but I've seen much worse things to do during/before a ride.

I have a friend who used to be one of the best riders in our club and he could eat or drink anything on a ride. I saw him drink a pitcher and at least 1 more glass of beer at the East Beach grill in Santa Barbara and then he led the group at 28-30 mph down the freeway back to Ventura.
Same guy at Solvang; eats at least 8 Danishes at Svenhard's and then drops everyone on a steep climb outside of town.

This reminds me of the time on a ride while I was wearing my --yup, you guessed it--Sierra Nevada jersey. While stopped at a red light, a guy sticks his head out of his truck and asks how I can drink while riding. I responded that I don't drink while riding but riding allows me to EARN my beer after the ride. That got him laughing.
