Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - had a accident

Was riding from work down 8th Avenue around 9:30 at night. On the corner of 53rd and 8th I stop on the red light and some limo driver hits me from behind. I hit the pavement - was unclipped so no injuries, did a nice aikido roll. The light was clearly red, changed some good 10 sec before, and it's hard for him to say he did not notice me - I have a blinker mounted on my helmet (yes, dorky me - there is a headlight in the front too).

So, I get up. My rear wheel is in shambles (will try to get some pics later today) and it's a nearly brand new Cane Creek track wheelset (http://www.canecreek.com/volos_track.html?&L=0%22%20onfocus%3D%22blurLink%28this%29%3B%22%20onfocus%3D%22blurLink%28this%29%3B%22%20onfocus%3D% 22blurLink%28this%29%3B). Needless to say I go ballistic. The driver is completely pale (well, as pale as a black guy could get). Everyone assembles around me, forming two equally vocal factions. Half the people are telling me to call the cops and the other half tells me I should just deal with the driver. After a bit of hesitation I decide for the latter (felt bad for the guy, I guess), so I get $300 for the wheel plus a ride home.

it really pisses me off that people put pressure on cyclists to be a "nice person" and not report it to the police when we get hit, dealing with people to get the money can be an increible and often unfruitful hassle, if someone does something wrong to you it's their fault, not yours, you should not be encouraged to not do what is right(reporting to the police), worse off is the pigs that often convince concussed cyclists(happened to me twice) to not report accidents because they're to lazy to do the paperwork.

There is nothing dorky about riding with lights and flashers. That took the onus off you and put it on the driver and the reason why he so willingly coughed up three bills. If you had not been so visible, you would have been sunk. Dorky or not, you got your wheel fixed.

Yeah, but techincally, it is illegal to ride at night without lights and or flashers. No leg to stand on in this case except the rider had flashers. The driver would have probably have had no problems with his employer otherwise.

It was the right trade not to call the cops. After the guy offered to pay on the spot, calling police would wrong:
(a) The amount of money would not really change, but would be delayed (negative carry).
(b) It would take time for the cops to drive over from the nearest doughnut shop (loss of productivity).
(c) The guy would probably loose his job and might have gotten points (bad for my carma).
I would have called the cops if I did actually have any injuries. Maybe there was some advantage in getting the police involved if the bike would have been totalled, too.

It was a perfect end to a perfect week. I was loosing money the whole week, my boss and everyone else were ****ting on my face for various reason and then Thursday, this ****e.

PS. Sounds like I am gonna commute on my road bike on Tuesday.

Right on, i don't think there is any point in bringing the cops into it unless you need to, Check the the frame, carefully, then acess the damage at 15% to that, and if there willing to pay you that on the spot forget the cops, but if they pull they a$$hole move, use your tax dollars to get him hassled by the A$$holes of the premeir divsion, the Po-lice
