Took my bike downtown (DC) today to check out Rolling Thunder. Pretty cool stuff.

View of the Pentagon north lot / this was an ocean of bikes. Of course I got heckled when a grizzley biker asked me where the motor was on my bike. I pointed to myself and chuckled.

I happened to be in D.C. a few years ago when this was going on--it seemed like th convoy would never end!

Did you see our team crossing Memorial Bridge around 11:30? We got there just before Rolling Thunder kicked off and contested our district line sprint on an otherwise empty bridge in front of several thousand cheering spectators. I took third. :D

YES I did. That would have been fun to ride across before the bikes came. I'm jealous.

That is out-freakin'-standing. Who'd have thought our DC line sprint was such a major event! We even got CBS there! :D :D

On a much more serious note, this event always impresses me, and serves (IMHO) as a reminder that we truly wronged a generation of American veterans. War is horrible and scarring and unnatural, and the only way that people can cope with that life-altering experience is to get support, affirmation, and gratitude from the people whom they are sworn to defend. These men and women went to fight a war with the belief that our nation would benefit and thank them, and they returned home to be spit on, jeered, and marginalized out of "mainstream" society and into the motorcycling community.

The show of support and solidarity at this event is absolutely astounding, and I really hope as our generation faces its big war that Rolling Thunder reminds all of us that it's not always about whether we agree or disagree with the politics of going to war, and that these brave men and women who sacrificed so much deserve our support, respect, and gratitude for what they do.

The funny thing is we didn't even plan it--just the usual sprint at the end of our usual ride.

In the moment, I really hadn't realized there were that many people assembled--I was focused on getting my legs ripped off by our fast kids. :o

Oh, I thought was some type of human powered tribute. It was very cool... everyone was starting to anticipate a floor of Harley's and along came the "real" bikers. It's so rare to have the streets closed off and so open around here. Kind of like when I leave the room when I am eating lunch and my dog sees a sandwich just sitting there- too good to resist.
